Imaginary Friends: Spooky or cute?

My nephew last night was heard talking in his room and when asked who he was talking too, he said there was a man in his Wardrobe. He did not seem scared and instead seemed quite content. I got a little spooked when I heard that as I am not sure if it was an imaginary friend or a ghost spirit of such. Do you think Imaginary friends are cute or spooky?

@BACONSTRIPSXXX The strange thing was when my brother started to pray in case it was a scary spirit, when he finished praying and asked my nephew if he was still there, my nephew replied 'nope he has gone'. spooky!

@gudheart Yeah I would look into it some more, like study the childs behavior around the imaginary friend... I know someone who thought it was a friend and it was an actual spirit playing with the child, scary stuff!

The kid is lonely and needs somebody on his side of fence I suppose. They will go away once that happens.

It would be difficult for me to say because I have never had an imaginary friend, or at least as far as I can remember.

@gudheart Maybe we had imaginary friends who did not like us and ignored us, so we chose to forget about it.

There is a show called The Whisperers and it talked to children only. I enjoyed it but it was strange. I don't feel your Nephew is haunted by a Ghost. I believe children can see things we can't and as long as he isn't harmed, i wouldn't worry about him.

I watched one episode of "The Whispers" and did not watch it again. I think that if it was not children killing their families, then I would have been fine with it. I like scary, but that was a little too creepy for me.

Oh wow interesting, do you think he could see him the ghost/friend. How old is your Nephew?

@gudheart Four is just about the right age for imaginary friends. It's best not to be too probing and don't tease or make too much of it. Certainly don't assume or suggest that its a ghost or a spirit. Imaginary friends go away naturally in a year or so.

Do you remember the movie "The Shining"? Well in that case the imaginary friend of the kid was pretty spooky. Most of the time they are only the fruit of kids imagination.

I agree with you. Kids love to imagine they are in a different world with different people around them. I do that when I was a kid.

I never had an imaginary friend but both my daughters did. The oldest had a baby gorilla and it was very tiresome having to wait for it to catch up. The youngest had a pair of twins - Bic and Akun - who varied in size from so small that they would fit in a matchbox to 'normal' size (the same size as her). I don't think there was much 'conversation' and we only knew that they were there when we were told that we were sitting on them (or about to) or had trodden on them or something.

@gudheart It was at about the time that David Attenborough had been filmed getting close and personal with a gorilla family.

As long as he knows it's imaginary, okay. If he thinks it is real, time to have a talk.

I am not sure. There are people that do not believe in ghosts or spirits and others that do. Even with that in mind, it is difficult to say whether the "friend" is imaginary or a spirit/ghost. Either way, it can be cute or spooky depending upon whether or not the "friend" changes the way a child acts. For instance, there are children that make up imaginary friends to take the blame for things that they do wrong. It is rather natural, especially if the child does not have siblings or pets, which are your normal "scapegoats", but it is not good to allow the child to do this. The one your nephew was talking about seems rather harmless and perhaps there for company, so I would just watch how the child acts and see how he talks and describes his friend and his interactions with this friend.

I have never experienced a child having an imaginary friend. I suppose it depends on the situation.

As long as he isn't scared, no harm done, I guess. If it was me, I'd freak out, but then, I am so much older.

Something like that happened to us too. I heard my young son talking in his room. I asked who he was talking to and he said there was a man in his room. I picked up the hatchet I was cutting kindling for the stove and sprinted to his room. Nobody was there.

As long as the child is not afraid I would think all is well. Not necessarily cute but most kids have imaginary friends. Some people believe they are ghosts that show up to children because they are not afraid.

That is why I tend to pray when ever I hear such things in case it is an evil spirit.

that's cute if we're talking about kids. if this would happen with an adult and he was serious about having an imaginary friend I guess it would be a little creepy. anyway I guess also in the case of kids it turns into a problem when an imaginary friend is the only friend that child has

Spooky. Fortunately my kids have never talked about any imaginary friend. I wouldn't know how to react or respond if they tell me.
