Metro rail snag

Kolkata, India
October 7, 2015 8:17am CST
On the day of the exam, we faced a large snafu. A reliable comfortable transportation system was in jeopardy. The Metro Rail distress strikes again! I got off on a nearby station and with three others, took an auto. Took 30 minutes to reach Gariahat, from where we had to get a taxi. It took a further 40 minutes to get to college. That's all because miraculously most of the fast (don't include bus during rush hour) vehicles had disappeared in front of the station this morning, not even one taxi! And all this because a metro got stuck at some other station. I mean, I can accept this technical problem on ordinary days, but today? It sucked. I just reached in time for my exam. Thankfully the teachers were pre-informed. Really beat the crap out of me this morning.

it was terribly disturbing, that's what it was. Like we were running all the time from here to there.

There are days like this and I know how annoying it can be when the metro is stuck for some problem. You have a beautiful metro station.

We are sorry to hear that Metro snag caused so much inconvenience to you on the day of your exam. I can understand your anxiety till you would have reached your college. I hope you would have overcome your anxiety on reaching your college and would have done well in your exam. (Next time you could leave earlier for your college on an exam day, so as to avoid this kind of convenience). Metro trains in Delhi also are one of the best modes of transport. Millions travel in Metro trains of Delhi, however, here also suddenly on any day some technical snags develop which causes delay in running of Metro trains and people remain standard at many platforms/stations. Else, its average frequency is - a train at every 2-3 minutes on most of the lines (routes).

yes metro is the best in Kolkata too. There's no better route from North to South Kolkata or vice versa. I left for college nearly 2 hours before the exam, that's as early as I could go. And yeah, the exam went well, luckily. I was anxious but what's gone is gone now.

I read about it. Sorry it stressed you out. I think there should stress allowance marks considering the situation.

Its crazy that these things happen on such a day which is going to be so important. On any other day you would watch many trains go past you & you wonder which one to get inside.

you don't know how right you are! Took the words out of my heart. Other days, I consider whether to get inside an AC or a non-AC train. Even let many trains go in between. That day was a total mockery of what I normally do!

I have heard from my younger brother that this has been a regular occurrence in Kolkata Metro. As my brother is to some extent claustrophobic, he has been avoiding Metro for some time, particularly when Kolkata Metro is mainly underground. In Delhi, we suffer this problem in Blue-line (i.e., Dwarka-NOIDA route) comparatively more frequently than other routes.

@ria1606roy Now my office is almost beside my Government accommodation. Even then, I use Delhi Metro at least one or twice every month. Earlier (4 years ago), I used to stay at Dwarka. At that time regularly used it.

yeah, this snag occurs quite often. Though it has been of zero occurrence recently so we were all a bit caught unaware that day. Mainly technical difficulties have been cropping up since they don't change the old racks, and there are frequent problems with the new ACs. But still it is one of the safest and fastest transportation route, almost always punctual. I understand about your brother, underground can get little claustrophobic if the air is not circulating well. How many lines do you have in Delhi Metro?

you bet the only good thing about Metro is, it recovers fast. However not fast enough that morning.

@simone10 well thankfully now it doesn't. But a year ago there were continuous problems with it.
