When I lived in the Sacramento, California area I was impressed with Sutter's Fort which is a State Historic Park in the heart of midtown. It's and interesting place to visit. This Fort was being built when the wagon trains came when the California Gold rush was on. The fort was built by a Swiss immigrant John Sutter more than 150 years ago. A man working for Sutter discovered Gold the when word was out all the workers deserted Mr. Sutter and all that was standing of the fort was the central building.

I have heard of Sutter before, although I mistakenly thought that he was the one that found the gold.

@Marcyaz I seem to remember that he asked a geology friend of his to identify it and he in turn took it to the Assay Office. Once again I cannot be certain if I remember correctly because it is a long time since I heard about the incident.

@much2say Since you are not so far have you been to the Phoenix area there are lots of things to do there also but go only in the winter months as I am sure you already know. Also another area to go to would be Monterey, CA and then head on to San Francisco where there is so much to see and do.

@Marcyaz I have! But since having kids, we haven't done a lot of traveling - only locally (we are in Los Angeles) - we've been as high as Santa Barbara and as low as San Diego. We want to venture out!

Oh dear all his workers became gold lust. That must have been awful that he was left with all the work! Look at his creation though. Good for him! I have never seen a real fort would love to Marcy!

It was all that plus an agricultural and trade colony and you have to remember back then it was a Mexican Alta California Province. It also served as a way station.

So that fort has been preserved I am assuming all these years. That's wonderful. I like some of these historic things.

Did any of the workers actually get any gold. Did they come back afterwards.
