In the name of comedy

I was watching a stand up comedy ( not out of choice) I was dragged in by a friend.. within minutes I was sick of it. I just couldn't laugh at those jokes anymore. They were all double meaning and vulgar in nature. This is not the first time, a few years ago our office had invited a stand up comedian for a Fun Friday event.. and it was the same.. Can comedy never be clean? or is it only here that comedians take the vulgar route? Do you like stand up comedy?

For some reason they seem to think they need a potty mouth. It is a shame.

Yes it is a shame and even more shame to those who laugh out loud.

@sofssu Yes, skin and language, we used to have a VCR that cut out the language so we could watch things with our kids. As they have gotten older we just tell them they are not to repeat anything from TV and a lot of times we view it first.

I do love stand up comedy - but it all depends on the comic and what's being said. I don't mind some of the "unclean" stuff, but it can get to a point where it's just too much for my ears and then it's not funny anymore. Certain "beep" words do not need to be said every other word of a sentence! I do appreciate comedians who don't have to resort to such vulgar humor - it's bad enough hearing vulgarity in everyday language!!

@sofssu I can stand a few words here and there - but I don't care for it when the focus of the humor is relies on such foul language.

@much2say I love it when its satirical, clean fun. when it aims to bring about awareness and social change. I am not into comedy which is vulgar, loud and and not clean. This person was using such stuff in every line he spoke.. Not my cup of tea. I don't even think we need to pay for such stuff.. Like you rightly say its bad enough having to listen to such stuff everyday.

@much2say I am with you totally.. it grates on your ears.. when humor comes clothed in foul language and then does a strip tease.

I once attended such a show and walked away in the middle when they started with their double meaning tactics.

@Bluedoll I am okay with it.. I can't stand it when people get so carried away that they have to swear and speak so vulgarly.

@sofssu I find it leaves a bad taste in my mouth specially it is bad comedy. It is almost like they get their kicks insulting people. However I have seen funny people and funny routines use bad lanquage in a way that was actually funny, you?

@sofssu I like comedy but I agree not everything am I willing to pay for. I've gone to a few standup's and some are disappointing but the one good joke makes up for it I suppose. I can think of a couple of comedians that I find funny but as far as what they communicate I don't agree with but can laugh with or at them. I think it is not polite to laugh at a person but ... Is it rude to laugh at a comic?

there are lots of good clean comics. It just sounds like you found a bad comedy night and there is little worse than unfunny comedy. I don't mind vulgarity in context but some comedians just think the swearwords and body part references are funny in themselves - sadly so do some audiences.

@sofssu it may be a test of company loyalty - seeing who laughs when the boss does and in a racist company the staff who are perceived to be foreign nationals even if born in the country they work, can be seen as the brunt of the humour too. It's despicable.

@arthurchappell I agree there are still some good shows. It takes wit and wisdom to come up with clean comedy.. The thought process is complicated there.. its easier for these comedians to take the cheap vulgar route. As I mentioned earlier in my response.. there seems to be a huge fan following for such comedy and they cater to those needs. I am sorry to say such people are even invited by big corporate for their celebrations.

@arthurchappell I hate those racist ones even more.. I also don't like people making others feel small in the guise of comedy.. It just go well with me. What is with the corporate.. don't they uses their sense of judgement before inviting such people?

Glad to hear your stand. I believe we can show our high moral values even with the way we react to dirty jokes. A cheerful heart does like a medicine according to Proverbs 17:22 this is why I enjoy clean jokes. I am basically a happy person and enjoy the company of those who have good sense of humor. But green jokes are not funny but rather very offensive to me. I can never be pleased with any unwholesome activity.

@salonga I find this kind of stuff extremely offensive.. I'd rather stay at home and read a book.. I love comedy.. but not this kind. I had to leave half way through..

Comedy doesn´t have to be vulgar at all. It is only that it seems easier to get laughs out of vulgar people with vulgar jokes. I like comedy when it is witty

@marguicha Its harder to come up with witty stuff so people resort to vulgar stuff. What irks me that that there is a huge fan following for stuff like this. You and I would soon become extinct at this rate I guess.

Some comedians think that they can only make people laugh by green jokes or some slapstick. Well, audiences are more intelligent these days.

I don't like that sort of comedy, but it can be quite clever when built into something a bit more substantial, such as a play

i'm with ya 'n fear i'd not suffered through such. there's plenty 'f great comedians who're neither crude nor lewd. folks used to tell me that 'twas my 'calling', but ya know, i aint that fond'f folks to do such with a crowd i didn't know.

@crazyhorseladycx I agree with you totally great comedians never stooped so low to make people laugh. It was really painful to sit through it.. i had to walk out within twenty minutes of such language.

@crazyhorseladycx honestly entertainment doesn't need to be vulgar and cheap. I tried sitting there until the break.. so I didn't disturb the audience. But I couldn't hold out that long I felt like I was going to throw up if I sat a minute longer.
