How Many Words can You Write?

I was thinking about story writing, and it differs from conversational writing, which we probably write a lot of in one day on here, and how much I do currently and how much I have done in the past. In the past I could write around 10,000 words for a story in a day, if I had no other distractions that day. It's a total I could use back in the present. How many words can you write?

You should probably sign up for NaNoWriMo. Then you could use that talent to write a book. My life is all distractions, I have no idea how many words would be written without them.

I've never heard of that. I will have to look into it and see what it's about.

It varies for me. For Nano, I do 1667 words or a bit more a day to achieve my goals. Outside of Nano, it's more or less 500 words, depending on how I'm feeling. Good for you for jumping into the novel writing business!

Well, when I have time to write, which isn't very often. But I wake up thinking about my stories, and even imagine interactions between the characters that probably won't be part of the story. When I create things, they have lives of their own and live in a world all to their own!

@KristenH Aren't your dreams real? Just like real life, with sensations and use of your five senses, where things feel like normal life, yet is a dream? That's how mine are.

@OneOfMany Same here. My dreams are vivid and almost real-like.

This is something that I have never had any reason to think about. My maximum would no doubt be restricted by the fact that I do not type, which definitely slows the progress down.

Yes, that would put a monkey wrench into the machine! I don't type in the traditional way with the fingers on the home row, but I have learned how to type with several fingers without looking at the keyboard, and it helps out a lot. It makes it go a lot faster when typing up something to only look at the screen.

@OneOfMany Despite having a great deal of practice over the years, I still need to look at the keyboard.

@Asylum I do to get started or for special characters. But if it's for simple words I can type pretty freely. It took a long time to develop a style. Funny thing is, that my left hand uses multiple fingers to type, while my right hand uses just the thumb and a finger!

I have no idea, I know how many word per minutes I can type with a good keyboard, that is from 65 to 85. (I am a professional typist).

@OneOfMany I took typing classes as a protest when my parents forbid me to enroll in the Architecture University... it was in 1968, a lot of problems at those times in the universities.

I'm no where near professional in the way I type, but it gets the job done!

Yes, when you really want to write and your mind wants to get to a destination, bulk writing is much easier!

I don't count the words when I write but I don't think I reached 1000 words. Never occurred to me that I should count.

Well if you use a program like Microsoft Word, it will count for you, then you just look at the total.

My calculations say 500 words per page. So that is 20 pages. I need to break a day into hours. Normally if I were to write every day then 2 to 4 hours might be my best attention otherwise I write - much worse. What is reasonable for a page 15 minutes? I might write one page then "break" carefully before starting a new page?

There is also the factor of thinking about to write in the first place. It may be easy to type a given amount if you know exactly what to type, but if writing a story you have to decide on the content as well.

@OneOfMany @Asylum I didn't get the notification for this post now that is something to write about. That (deciding what the content will be about) might be what the break is for. It is a process but I understand getting it started is the first step. Having a plan might help but I've never been able to make one I actually follow.

If we were going to the mind's word count it would be well over anything any of us could type!

To be honest with all the stuff I got going on here I probably won't be able to write to much if at all.

Some people write entire short story books that are 10,000 words, and I often wonder how they fit everything in so little space! If only I could do that and get them out in the world, then I would be way ahead. :)

About 600 words a minute more or less

That's a lot of words a minute. That would be like a fast talker or a person that uses many small words.

lol! it wont matter for me. I will write any without limit if i am paid well. I never ever had to write more than 5000words a day till now. In the freelancer website, i had chances for just that. But if anyone wanted to write stories or anything, I will do that at cheap rate. I hope i could barely manage 20000words.

I'm sure if it was for pay people would write more, but this was writing not for pay, just entertainment.
