I think so! manners or say good manners are really very important but nowadays we see less of them. Being courteous or saying things like "Thank You", "Please", "Sorry" etc are sometimes considered unimportant by few people... So, what's your take on this changing good manners?

I remember once an American tourist stepped on my foot as we bumped into each other and I said sorry. He paused and asked me why was I sorry? I guessed he was wondering why I had said sorry when he had stepped on my foot! He looked at me puzzled. I said, sorry.

Manners of any kind seem to have flown out the window. That is the job of parents to teach their kids good manners and hopefully they will continue the good habits through life.

I think we live in world where the standard of good manners is different from before. When we are in a public transport, we may not see young people giving up their seats to the elderly ones. They may pretend to be asleep or they may really be tired. Sometimes when they give up their seats to old people, they get scolded by the old people. Those old folks think the young people see them as useless.

@scheng1 and @moffittjc...i've seen that too! Or where an able bodied person refuses point blank to offer their seat on a train for an elderly person or heavily pregnant woman. I find that sad. But I wouldn't change because people with good manners make all the difference in this weird world.

@scheng1 I've had that issue happen to me when I was trying to be nice and hold a door open for an elderly woman who was behind me. She scolded me for holding the door open for her, and told me she was perfectly capable of opening the door herself. I wasn't questioning her ability to open the door, I was practicing the manners that were taught to me by my parents, and that is to always open doors or hold doors open for women and for our elders.

I totally agree with you! Where I come from, we have this expression, manners don't cost a thing, and if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything. It's such a shame that these days some people prefer to be rude and go around upsetting and bullying others. They must have very miserable lives. I actually feel sorry for them.

I think manners are still around. Most people say please and thank you. Even on the road yesterday, almost everyone was behaving. I noticed people were cooperating at intersections without traffic signals to take turns and be safe. Color me an optimist.

@NeldaHoxie...That's fantastic! Maybe you live in an area full of cultured people, or there's hope yet that manners aren't totally gone and exist in little pockets here and there. But yes, it's refreshing :)

@glenniah I agree! What bugs me is people who lack etiquette and have no clue on how to behave in a civil manner. Like say when you hold the door open for someone, and they just breeze right through; no smile let alone a thank you!

Good manners is really an important part of a person. I am observant when it comes to manners. Whenever, I met a person who does not say thank you, please, sorry, etc, I just ignore it, I won't say anything but deep inside I felt a cloud of ingratitude. However, I always put in my mind that the person is not just used to saying well-mannered words..

Absolutely manners are important! And even more so nowadays than ever before! Since so many people in the world have very little skills when it comes to manners, those that still do exhibit them stand out from the crowd. I always try to practice good manners, and I work hard to instill them into my kids as well. A little good manners goes a long way in this rude, insensitive world we live in. People do still notice!

It's always nice to say sorry and thank you whenever necessary. Maybe not in excess. But this practice should not be forgotten, or we lose a bit of respect for others as well as for ourselves.

I am always for the observance of good manners. In fact, here in the Philippines, the 1st thing you'll notice from our younger generation is the manner of answering anybody in a conversation with the use of "po" and/or "opo". Both are words to show respect, especially to the elderly.

It is very important to have good manners. Liberal use of common words like 'thank you', 'excuse me' and 'sorry' helps us leaving a good impression on others. In my day to day life, I liberally use thank you to the person, who has done me a favor (irrespective of its quantum). I feel if we have committed something wrong, we should not mind saying sorry or being apologetic. What about you?

@ashuli - Yes, it is true that people are stressed and many a times they just forget to be decent, polite and courteous. If they get anything done by anyone, they do not feel like saying 'thanks' because they think that it was other person's duty to do the job. We just cannot avoid discourteous guys or rude people. It is good to hear that you do not mind saying sorry, if you have done something wrong and you frequently use 'thank you'.

@dpk262006 Indeed its crucial to have good manners but nowadays this is the most unavailable feature in a human... Nowadays people take others for granted and if they dont get what they want, start acting rude... this sounds very weird to me, but then I cant change the world nor I want to... I just avoid such people... As for me, please and thank you are few of my fav words and dont mind saying a sorry when the need arises
