Anyone here enjoy the Food is Free Communities?
All it takes is removing your front yard..growing veggies, herbs and trees
If we all grow a garden and share our excess, we'll have more than enough. It's empowering to grow your own food and we all have the ability to make a difference in our community.
I do my part and it is so much cheaper than buying everything at the store.
I plan on chickens soon for my own free range Eggs

I really wish I could have someplace to do so Rosekitty.
There are not even community gardens around here where I live.
I would love to have chickens and goats.
That would be me all set

@TiarasOceanView ..it is so nice to grow..are you allowed some pots in your yard..front or back?..if so all you need is to grow some lettuce now, radishes,or tomatoes...you'd be amazed what fun and love you can bring to your household or maybe sharing with friends..

if'n only doin' such 'twas free. there's waterin', seeds, tools to do such, etc. but, i agree. used to've a huge garden (nearly 1/2'n acre) 'n was most glad to share the wealth with many.
i'm all fer community gardens, particularly in 'deprived' neighbors. folks need to gain that knowledge 'n start takin' more part in what goes in their bellies.

@crazyhorseladycx yes people need to rely on each other instead of paying groceries stores all that money we could barter or exchange things needed

@Rosekitty yepperz, e'en folks with limited space can grow 'nough to barter with. the best idea fer folks who live in town is to get with their neighbors 'n 'em come up with a 'plan' - decidin' who's gonna grow what so nobody's a mass supply 'f say zucchini whilst there's no peas.

All of the above implies that we are going to be served more of those brownies
Okay, seriously, I have only a small terrace garden - and we have managed to fit in about 10 flower pots. We have some roses and aloe vera. I have been seeing some nice shares on Facebook from websites that have lots of information on making our own terrace gardens where we can grow veggies.

@Rosekitty - You may be just a tiny bit too young to remember the Victory Garden days back during World War 2. Many of us had 'em growing back then.

We have a community garden at the school. Of course, there are a lot of people with their own gardens at home, since we live in the country. Even people in "town" have yards ... it is more a suburban than urban environment. Still, the community garden is a great idea, and we take turns caring for it and reaping the rewards.

@Rosekitty Yes, I have gone pink for the month, even though I really do not like the color pink. I do like pink roses, though, so it is a compromise.
The good thing about the community garden is that each family gets a week, so it is not too much to handle. Unfortunately, if the appointed family can't care for it in that week and does not contact another family for help, then many of the plants die or get overgrown with weeds.

My parents have their own garden and chickens. They provide me with fresh vegetables every month and they really add an extra taste to my cooking. I live in an apartment so I don't have my own garden. I am planning to plant basil and some herbs in pots and keep them at my balcony.

@Rosekitty I am lucky enough to have grown up in the countryside and I can recognise how natural fruits and vegetables should look and smell. I agree with you, they can't be compared with the store vegetables.

I would love to have a garden, but it's really tough to do in an apartment. We don't get enough light indoors, and while we have a small backyard it doesn't get enough light during the summer thanks to the buildings around us and all the trees.
I thought about putting some containers out in the front... then the javelina got into my neighbor's plants, so it seems like that might not be a great option.
I've actually heard that some communities have banned growing produce in front yards. I think that's terrible.

@yukimori...I still use some pots and place them in spots where they got some sun..you could start with tomatoes and herbs for at least yourself..some greens for salads..

@yukimori I love zukes too and i hope you figure out a way..some don't need sun all day..i know my tomatoes enjoy some shade or they get droopy..

@Rosekitty Yeah, the only downside to that is that I'm going to have to move them around. The front gets a lot of sun, but I'm going to have to figure out some way to keep them away from the javelina if I do that.
I'd love to get a bunch of zucchini plants going, too. Those seem to do really well in this area, and I love cooking with them.

Good for you!
I love having a garden. I love having chickens.
Cleaning the poop isn't fun, but the eggs are amazing.
It's really great going out to the garden and picking dinner.
I can and freeze to save a lot over the winter. This year I grew a lot of black beans and they should last all year.
Good luck with the chickens.

raised beds is a must..some people put chicken wire in the bottom so pesky critters can't dig up

@Rosekitty if I get to a point where i dont have to work full time and have a little extra fundage going to deff to this. I need raised beds I think, with netting bottoms, or something to keep the burrowing critters out, of which we have many. I also need to fence this section off from the dogs, as the puppy would dig and graze

I usually plant a garden but unsuccessfully. I hope next year is different, in a different place. I know a lot of places have community gardens. My concern about chickens is what to do with them when they get old and do not produce. I do not want to kill them.

@GardenGerty..chickens that are to old can then be just pets..let them just roam around and eat bugs on the ground..

Yum. I wish churches and other public places would grow less grass and grow food for their people. As far as chickens go, we buy feed for them now instead of eggs at the regular grocery store. That's wonderful that you give away your tree fruit. I'd love to see those trees. I bet they are gorgeous.
