Until The Last Leaf Falls

I have not been around a lot today, there was one urgent thing that I had to do in the garden. I had to cover the pond with the leaves net. This is an annoying task, I have to empty the pond and clean it first. Then I go inside and install the net over the pond surface and I secure it all along the border with some rocks and stakes. When finished, I fill the pond with clean water, so it's ready for the winter. The net will stay in place until the last leaf falls. I will remove it before the first snow, I like to see the frozen surface of the water in winter. Do you also have things that you hate to do?

We have to close the pool, which will be done this week. It's an good 3-4 hours of work.

I have also closed the outside hot tub this afternoon, my hands hurt for picking out the already fallen leaves manually.

@AbbyGreenhill It is not yet too cold, 50 in the morning and around 57/58 during the day. It seems the cold is coming from Thursday.

@LadyDuck We have no trees near the pool just for that reason, but if there were any in there we scoop them with a net - no cold hands. How cold is it there?

If I had a yard, I would hate raking leaves. That is not one of my favorite things to do.

It is annoying and many times when you have almost finished the wind blows and all the leaves floats around you.

I can imagine the fish are looking forward to the pond being filled again.

I have no fish in the pond, during several months in winter the surface is frozen. I should install something to make them breath, it's expensive and it's another painful task... no fish!

@LadyDuck At least if the pond freezes over they will remain fresh and you will not need to keep them in the freezer.

I can imagine that for you everything is a hard task now, I like vacuuming and cleaning the house, with the exception of cleaning the oven.

This reminds me of our friend who has a pool. He doesn't believe in covers for some reason - but then he ends up having to clean the pool all the time. They have many trees around their yard, and much of the leaves (and dirt) end up in the pool below. Having some sort of cover makes more sense to me. We don't get snow here, but a bunch of joke how lovely it would be if the pools could freeze for winter - then we could ice skate - hee hee!

@LadyDuck It must look pretty neat when it freezes in the winter too! Just how big is your pond?

It makes sense to have a cover, at least I can keep everything clean for the nice season.

@much2say It is not big, let say, it is the size of a medium pool, but it is nice in winter.

Hello Dianne, I am glad you joined, it is too frustrating to interact on the other site now. I agree, there are always things we dislike, but must be done.

One thing I dread doing is raking the leaves as they fall off the trees. I have one pretty good sized tree in my front yard, and it is loaded with leaves. I am older now, and things are a lot harder to do than they were when I was younger. I do have a blower and I have used it instead of raking, but it seems to blow them where I don't watnt them to go.

@LadyDuck If I blow them before there are to many, then it would be easier, but I wait until they are are almost off, and then it becomes harder. I just don't like doing them to soon, as I have to redo them anyway, since they just keep falling.

I also have a blower, but sometimes it's quick and easier to rack the leaves.

No, We have no such tasks. We have to clean the compound though regularly that gets filled up with dry leaves from several trees.

@LadyDuck We do not rake but use a hard broom to sweep off. Raking takes a lot of time as we have several trees.

The more you rack the leaves the more seem to fall down from the trees.

@LadyDuck It's like the myth of Sisyphus where he has to keep rolling a rock up a hill for eternity. It just runs away from him and back down when he gets near the top. Oven cleaning is the same - it never ends.

It does sound a daunting task, though it is nice to actually have a pond Anna. Yes, I only have an apartment no garden, or yard so the only thing I hate to do is clean the oven.

i ne'er emptied my pond, jest did a good cleanin' 'n covered it with the net. 'course, that'd tick the birds off 's it interfered with 'em takin' their baths in the waterfall. i aint real fond 'f cleanin' corrals these days, findin' it a most dauntin' task with weakened muscles.

I have put bird baths in the garden, the pond is pretty big, last year I have not covered it and in summer it was a mess, bad smelling for the rotten leaves. This is a hard work, some times I am tempted to cover the pond and forget about it.

@crazyhorseladycx The birds are funny, they do not use the nice bird bath I put in the garden and they go to bath in rain puddles.

We are surrounded by Oak Trees. The acorns drove us crazy this year but when the leaves start to fall we will have tons of leaves on the yard. We live with a ravine in the back and we gather the leaves and dump them down the ravine. It is hard work and yes I hate doing all that work but we have to to save the lawn.

There are household chores that I don't hate doing but tire me so much. One is the cleaning & "reconstructing" an indoor comfort room pad for our cats & kittens. We thought of having it in a corner of our kitchen door so that the pets need not go out of our house for their BM needs. The main reason is, we don't want any of them face the risk of being hurt, or worse, killed by our dogs who seem to be in constant war with them. Hay...

Oh there are lots of things I hate to do. I imagine I would hate dealing with the leaf net if I had a pond, too. But I can see that it might be attractive in the winter with the ice on the surface.

There aren't a lot of chores that I dislike.....Oh wait ironing and vacuuming, my husband always did that and now I have to but I don't do it very often. A pool would be lovely but I imagine a lot of hard work.
