This morning I went to the store and met a lady I have talked to before as we were talking her phone rang and I noticed her screen was cracked. She hung up her phone and said I will talk to them later on. I mentioned her screen was cracked and she said yes she had dropped it due to her fibromyalgia which I didn't know she had. She then told me it is not unusual for a person with fibromyalgia to fall a lot and soon she would have to stop working. She is concerned how her children will react as with only their father working they won't have all the things , they have had in the past. I told her you know people who buy their children everything will expect everything given to them when they grow up but children who have to wait on things will know that not everything they want is given to them. They will have to work for things when they are grown.

I told her children can understand a lot more than we think they can.

@TiarasOceanView I think this quality is what helped God decide that Women are the only ones who are perfect for being Mothers

Today's children are more smart and more aware of many things than the kids of our generation. That said, it is still wrong to keep providing everything they have had asked for. I can only pray and hope that her kids were well brought up and they have got better brains to understand.

I don't know her children but from talking to her I would say she will know what to do and tell them when the time comes and she is no longer working.

I have fibromyalgia and haven't worked since I was diagnosed a few months after my second daughter was born. I like to think my kids didn't want for anything. I couldn't really afford to put them in sports but I couldn't afford NOT to. Those activities shaped them into the people they are today. But there were some things they couldn't have and when they saw the things their friends had that they didn't, my daughters considered those friends spoiled. They know they have to work for what they want. They're 19 and 22 now.

@Shyamalaa No improvement and from what I understand it only continues to get worse.

When they knew there were things they couldn't have they knew if they were to have something like it they would have to work for it. Sorry you have fibromyalgia and couldn't work after your second daughter was born.

I gather that she is quite a young woman, and it's very sad that she has this disease. She must be a nice person if she is worrying about the children rather than herself.

There is a saying in Hindi which says that a mother is always good even if the child turns out to be bad.

I don't think that's necessarily true. We gave our kids everything, but we also gave them love and showed them how hard we worked to afford the things we gave them. We taught them how to handle money and how to respect it. They are both grown now and very successful. They work hard and they do not waste money. I think you can give, but you have to give wisdom also.

@Shyamalaa Very true if they have good friends they will go down the good path but if the friends are not so good they may go down the wrong path.

You are lucky your children imbibed the wisdom you gave them! So much depends on the company they keep also!

It is natural to have concern about how it may affect the children, but in cases such as this she must put herself first as far as this issue is concerned.

It's just sad that youngsters today are all about material things. I really do hope the lady would worry less about what her children think and think about herself first, especially with her condition.

It is sad how some people think we owe them and when they don't get what they want from you, they are no longer around.

This is very true. Even when they have had to learn to do without, some still grow up thinking everything needs to be given to them, but then its more on them rather than their parents.

I don't know much about Fibro..most of those things mentioned above i have but i put them off as getting older.. I can understand her wanting the best for her children..all parents do..but sometimes the best thing to do is let them work for it like ones parents did..

I so agree with you. This a perfect time to start getting these kids to work for what they want and do chores for neighbors or something to make ends meet. Have them watch The Waltons. LOL

Although I heard of Fibro, I don't know much about it. As for the children, well, I try and give my kids what I can. But they do understand that money does not grow in trees. My evil ex, has loads of money and won't go for spit for the kids. That I don't like. I am not saying they should get everything they want, but come on. give in a little. They wouldn't have half of what they have now if it weren't for me. But this year I told them I have to curb it. The money is tight. They totally understand.

What you said to her is very true. When my kids were growing up, my ex was mostly out of the picture so I had to do it alone. They didn't always have the things they wanted but they always had the things they needed. Because of that, they appreciate everything they have so much more.
