Do You Like to Watch the Political Debates?

I have listened to nearly every televised political debate going back to the Kennedy-Nixon debate. I watch the debates on both the Republican and Democratic side.
Why do I watch them?
I don't like to be told by reporters what they think were the most important things that were said. I don't like to be told by reporters how to interpret what was said. I don't like to be told by reporters "who won."
I like to be able to listen to the tone of their voices, look at their expressions and decide for myself what was important.
What about you?

I have to agree that we have a pretty pitiful lot to choose from. These are the best of the best? Very scary thought.

I watched one of the Democrats a couple of days ago and enjoyed when they were floored with questions.

Politicians certainly have to be quick on their feet, or they can really make a mistake when they answer questions.

I was impressed by tonight's debate. They did not fight with each other, even when they had differences of opinion. They also did not criticize minorities, women, etc. It was a very uplifting debate.

I see you are from Switzerland. One of our daughters spent one year of high school in Zermatt and we visited while she was there. What a lovely country.

@DeborahDiane I live in Switzerland, but I am Italian. Here politicians are pretty serious, there are not really political debates in TV. Italy is a mess, politicians are only there to try to make money... it is a circus!

@LadyDuck - I've heard about the political fights in Italy. They can get pretty crazy at times.

We do watch both, I like to know what each sides plans are for the future. For one thing, if the side I want does not get in, I like to know what I am in for with the other side. But yes, I do not like the media to decide what was said. Not to mention, sometimes they are quite entertaining and I would not want to miss that!

@DeborahDiane I do like to watch the media opinions after I watch the debate, sometimes it is amazing what they saw/heard compared to what I saw/heard. I think really? You got that out of it, gee I missed that. Guess you saw a different debate

I agree with you completely! I want to know what they plan to do. How can I vote intelligently if I do not know?

As much as I like watching my New England Pats' games, lol. I'm a junkie. I watch them all, including so called "3rd parties". There were also 2 Libertarian party primary debates this weekend, gonna catch those online tomorrow. During the last presidential election, there were 2 debates that got very little publicity in main stream media. It was in the general election. The first night consisted of presidential candidates from the Libertarian, Green, Socialist, constitution and Progressive parties. Of those parties, the Libertarian, Green and Constitution were on enough state ballots for a mathematical win. But you probably never heard anything about any of them. the debate and election systems are a sham. The two big box parties have wielded great power in excluding all other parties from debates, state ballot access and media is culpable in ignoring their existance.

I was a volunteer in the headquarters of Ross Perot when he ran against Bush and Clinton back in the early 1990's. I was disappointed when he lost. He did very well for a third party candidate, however. I wish the media gave more publicity to 3rd party candidates, too.

I do watch all the debates and the reporters and even the moderators can sometimes annoy the heck out of me. I don't like the fact that it is the reporters who get to ask all the questions and sometimes their questions don't cover the important issues I want answers on,.

I am sure that political debates vary from country to country. I like to see if one of them messes up.

Other people from India have also commented they hate the debates in your country. I guess they are much different than ours.

I know a lot of people don't watch debates, but I like to see them before I vote for anyone. It is as close as I get to most candidates.

Being on the other side of the world and without cable, I had to settle for live blogs and clips of all the debates. You're right that the media can present slanted views of the whole thing, but they're only doing what we ourselves do without even realizing. Appearance and tone can very easily distract from a core message. I suppose the classic example of this is the Kennedy-Nixon debates - people who watched the debate on TV scored Kennedy a clear winner: those who only heard the debate on radio heavily favored Nixon.

Even though I was in elementary school during the Nixon-Kennedy debate, I remember watching it as a school assignment. That was a very close election, despite the debate.

Reading their web pages and checking their history is a good way to research them, too.

I agree that it is not the same to read the papers or just see the sound bites on the news. However, sometimes life gets in the way of seeing the entire debate.
