I don't wear suntan lotion

You may think I'm nuts, but hear me out. Your skin is a very important organ. It absorbs things you put on it and I don't trust suntan lotion not to have things in it that are harmful. Very recently, for example, it was found that beta carotene (which is in some lotions) actually can speed up the development of melanoma cells. Who knows what else might be dangerous in there? I also think that lotion gives a false sense of security. I prefer to stay out of the sun when I can and to cover up when I cannot. I don't wear sunglasses either, except when driving. Science has also recently learned that your eyes play a part in tanning. Wearing sunglasses slows the tanning response and that's not good. I wear a hat when I'm out and keep the brim tilted to protect my eyes. Both my glasses and my contact lenses also provide UV protection.

Believe it or not, I do exactly like you. I never liked suntun lotions, my skin is sensitive and I got a rash every time I tried to use one. I do not like sunglasses, I prefer to wear a hat and I avoid the sun in the hottest hours.

I just got back from seeing my skin doctor. Clean bill of health, said my 67 year old skin is very healthy.

I am now picturing you as a squinting little dried up raisin with legs and arms.

I understand, but both my opthomologist and dermatologist would disagree with you, except for the long sleeves and hats. I also wear driving gloves. Fair Irish skin and light blue eyes mean I protect myself.

But I bet neither of them are aware of that latest finding about beta carotene.
