How did you pick your baby’s name?

It’s funny how parents chose the names for their children. When my daughter was born I had only one friend when we were living in Spain. Here name was Carmen. I knew I wanted my daughter named Carmen right away. I told myself that my baby would be a girl and not a boy. I never chose a name for a boy. When my daughter was born we had no way of knowing if it would be a boy or girl. So we had to fill out all the paper work at the hospital. They asked us for both names on the paper. I entered only one. Then they demanded I enter a name for a boy. I had no idea and the only name that popped into my head was Robert. This was the name of my young brother. I’m not sure why I didn’t choose Carlos or Carl or even Steve but I chose Robert. Anyhow I got my wish and my daughter was born. Her full name is Maria del Carmen Rodriguez. I added her father’s last name to the papers. When you translate this name it mans the saint of Carmen. There is a special saints day for Carmen. I feel like I gave her the best name in the world because she sure has been a saint. Even in life today she has to be a saint to put up with her daughter at times. Her 14 year old daughter is a hand full and can be so head strong it takes a saint to put up with her. How did you name your children and why did you chose this name? I picked from a list of baby names and combine it with my favorite actor's name. But we're still undecided. My husband and I are still trying to figure out other options.

It's hard if you ask me because your child will have this name forever. I know my daughter likes her name but not her full name. She likes to only use Carmen and has never used Maria del Carmen. But that too is my fault because all I ever called her was Carmen.

@poehere Nothing to be sorry about - not having a kid was my decision. My husband picked Ruby because she is our little gem.

I'm sorry to hear that. Then how did you pick your dog's name. You still need to pick names for your pets even if you don't have children.

We are currently 8 months pregnant and know it will be a girl. We do have two names on our wish list and are still contemplating which one to use. The second name does have the disadvantage that it was the most popular girl's name in Germany in 2014 and we originally had decided to not use a name from the "top 10" since there will be too many girls with such a name *lol*

I agree with you so much. I hope you can find the perfect name for your daughter by the time she arrives.

Oh, with the help of a book that explained the meanings of many first names. Remembering to give the right name, spelled correctly, to the Registrar in the hospital the day after the birth could be challenging, but their names are all correctly-spelled!

That's a great way to do it. My daughter's husband wanted their son named Weldon but my daughter flipped out. Especially when some friends of her's started to tease her asking if her baby was well done. So in the end they named their son Caleb Weldon. This was so he had his grandfather's middle name. They named their daughter Trinity Ann so she had my middle name.

Maria is a beautiful name. My cousin's name is Maria, when it's supposed to be Marianne. I don't have any children. Lovely post. As for me, it was either Kristen or Laura. But they loved this name the best--my former NJ neighbor and my mother's friend had named their only daughter Laura. Kristen in Scandinavian for anointed.

@poehere I know. Especially if you're a celebrity, they pick out of this world names. Same here. Summer Rain and River Rose were two beautiful names that Christina Aguilera and Kelly Clarkson named their newborn daughters. Now Kelly's pregnant again... I wonder what she'll name her newborn next.

It is interesting to read how you choose the name 'Maria del Carmen Rodriguez' for your daughter. Hope she grows up as per her name. At our place, our priest suggests an alphabet (on the 40th day after birth of a baby) or two to give a name to our baby boy or girl. I do not know the exact details how does he find that particular alphabet of the name . Then we give a name to a baby, which begins with that particular alphabet.

At least this one is an easy one, Ann. (I'm also happy there is nothing about it that call for sympathy or regrets on anyone's part!) My daughter should have been a son if you go by the statistics of the rest of my family. My parents had 16 children. The first three were boys. Of my siblings, I am the only one who has a daughter as his eldest child. I am also the next-to-the-youngest in our family. So there was a strong feeling that we were all going to have a boy first. My first wife and I picked out a boy's name and never gave a single thought to having a daughter. Starting when "he" was just a tiny bump, I read stories to "him", we sang songs to "him" and called "him" Bruce, as that was the name my wife and I chose for our son... We both told "him" how life was going to be after "he" was born. Can you imagine the shock we experienced when, instead of the perfect little boy we knew we were going to welcome into this world, a perfect little angel was born in his place?! Since we couldn't call our angel Bruce, we were at a complete loss for a name for her! The nurse was shocked we didn't have a name picked out for a girl! She thought it was hilarious when we explained why we only had a boy's name picked out! My daughter was born at 2 am. My wife and I dozed until we were awakened that morning about 7 am by the loud cries of our daughter. When I handed my daughter to my wife, she ask me if I thought Pretty* would make a good name for her. I had to think about it for two or three seconds before I agreed. My daughter didn't have a middle name until about a week later. *My daughter's online name is PrettyEvil. Of course, that is not the name we gave her IRL.

I went through a lot of names on the internet initially. We chose a list of names for a boy and a girl as each one in our family liked different names. Naming ceremony is a grand affair in India and it took a really long time to finalize a name that everybody was happy with. We named him Ishan which means the third (universal) eye of lord Shiv.
