1/. Leaves litter the streets Crunching the dead underfoot So disrespectful 2/. Alliteration Compensates for lack of rhyme Perhaps not today. 3/. Rock Lobster plays out To stop me getting depressed So I switch it off. 4/. Christmas encroaches Never asked for ‘old’, Santa Where’s eternal youth? 5/. Brain-food Haiku count Verbs, nouns, adjective stanzas. That’s my five a day Arthur Chappell

Ha-ha - gotcha! The middle line of Number 4 has one syllable too many! In one hour from now I shall be leading a workshop on poetry in which I hope to use the haiku and the tanka to get people interested in writing poems to strict rules. I should be able to report on progress later today!
