OK it is funny how we name animals. Here is how I named all of my animals –
First cat I ever had I rescued him from a dumpster in Mexico. He was all black and stinking of garbage. I called him Boonie.
Not long after we found another cat for my daughter. This was a female and she was thrown from a car. She was only a few weeks old. When she tried to meow all she did was squeak. So we called her Squeaky. She never learned how to meow right all she ever did was squeak.
My first dog was a small white, black, and brown Pekinese. He was given to me on my 22nd birthday. When I brought him home he was so tiny and fit in the palm of my hand. I put him down on the tile floor and all he did was slip and slide. He was afraid of the floor and looked so scared. I started to think of that cartoon Wiley Coyote and it made me laugh so I called him Wiley.
My first cat in Tahiti I found scared and sick on one of the small Motu islands where we went fishing at time. He was all white and had the most beautiful blue and brown eye. I put him in the canoe and brought him home. I named him Sheba.
Then I took another cat – but this cat was a wild cat and tried to bite and scratch you. He was given to me in a cage. I tried to talk with him and play with him. But he was a fighter. He was named Rocky. Finally Rocky came to me and he ws a one person cat for sure. He trusted no one but me.
Then I was given my first dog here. He was a small whit puppy that looked like he had a b lack eye patch over one eye. I named him Bandit because he was so funny. If you scolded him he would steal one of your flip flops and hide it around the yard.
Now I found another cat that was thrown in the cutter on the road. I brought him home. My boyfriend named him after a movie we just watched Shaka Zulu. So he ended up with the name Shaka.
On my birthday my boyfriend game me a puppy. I looked at her and named her Naya without even thinking about this one. Naya is Indian for free bird.
After Shaka died we wanted another cat. My boyfriend told me to take 2. So this is what I did. I went to the vets where they let you adopt abounded animals. I took a black cat and a tiger color cat. I named the black cat Tyson and I named the tiger color cat Caesar. It was after the fight in Caesar Palace with Mike Tyson.
Now our 3rd dog I called him Nita from the Indian name meaning big black bear. Nita looked just like Bandit but I can’t call him Bandit.
My last dog I just received not long ago I call him Dakota. I had always wanted to name a dog Dakota but never did. That is how he got this name.
It’s funny how we name our animals. How did you name yours?

Your post makes an interesting reading about names of dogs and cats.
Sadly I do not have pets as of now, so I cannot tell you, how I would choose their names.

We have three cats. I won't even go into all the other dogs, cats, rats, etc. I have had in the last 64 years of my life. My first pet was named Robin and I have no idea how he got that name. He was a cocker spaniel born on the same day I was and lived to be thirteen. We have had many cats mostly. My daughters favorite is the male grey tabby named Colbert. He is the junior of Senior Colbert who ran off about three years ago. They were both named after Colbie who was a long hair we had when my daughter was about eight. Loved that cat. Then there is the grey long haired male who just showed up here one morning when my daughter was out side. My daughter asked me what I thought we should name him. I said Silver because when his fur hit the light just right it looked silver. And then there is Crystal. She was all ready named. She was left in one of the apartments here and my daughter adopted her. So, in naming animals I think it has to do with what is going on at the time, the history of animals in the past and the animal's personality.

I love all the names and how you've selected them. What's funny is my GF dog will have her puppies soon and I have already decided on the name for my new female dog. Her name will be Cheyanne and then I will have Cheyanne and Dakota. No reason or rhyme behind this one it is just something in my head.

@sugartoes I love naming my animals too. My GF dog had puppies and she asked me to help her name one puppy she wanted to keep. I gave her a lit of names but so far I am not sure which one she gave to the puppy.

Okay. I can do this one. When I had Buddy, my first childhood pet, it was sort-of picked out from my name, when we got him from the shelter. Then there was Sweet Pea, a cat from a neighbor when I moved to Ohio, and didn't get along with other cats. Her original name was Pee Wee, but I've changed it to Sweet Pea, because she was a sweet but temperamental cat. As for my two fur babies, my two senior adult male cats were originally from my brother, before he gave them to me, a decade ago--they didn't get along with his two dogs and my SIL's two cats at the time. He named the oldest one Marshall after the football player Marshall Faulk, because he was a bit big and overweght, his name is named Wiley after Wiley E. Coyote, because he's like the cartoon character.

That's so cute. I named my little puppy Wiley because he was so scared and afraid to walk on the tile. I laughed when I saw him and thought that was a great name for him.

I totally love naming my animals. There are a few I just looked at and knew what I would call them right away. One or two I had to see their personality before I named them.
