Why Do People Think Celebrities Are So Special

I have always been very confused by peoples obsession with the world of celebrity, especial those that treat some of these so called celebrities as gods. I so often see headlines saying so and so dazzels in a certain dress or has bought a whopping great mansion, and think who in the world are they! To me a celebrity is just another human being, no better or worse than the rest of us, but the media likes to show them as being special and I just can't under stand why. What are your opinions of celebrities, are they just like you and me or are they someone you look up to and aspire to be like?

I don't get it myself. I would never line up to see an actor or sports figure.

If you are prominent in the worlds of entertainment or sport, you are bound to be in the public eye, and the cult of celebrity is likely to come your way. However, it is worth remembering that these people are only in that position because they have a very limited set of talents - acting isn't really all that difficult to do, and most popular musicians can't really sing and have only a moderate ability to play an instrument (although of course there are exceptions to this particular generalisation!) What I am saying is that if you take the celebrity away from the very limited environment in which they excel, you haven't got a lot left! In the UK, we tend to think that Americans have developed the cult of Hollywood celebrity because they kicked out the royals in 1776! You need a royal family to look up to and admire, but celebs from another field have to act as substitutes!

I think some of it goes back to the Depression, where people, for lack of a better term, fantasized about the "glamourous" Hollywood actors. I also think there's a degree of "class envy" involved: they're "rich and famous," we're not. To some degree, I can understand appreciating someone who has talent, be it acting, singing, or writing. What I can't get is "celebutards," people who are famous for no reason whatsoever (such as the Kardashians or the "19 Kids and Counting" people). Part of that, I guess, is the voyeusim in us, but I'd rather treat my own family like "celebrities" than watch some other family.
