A good deed.

I am not a gambler, and I bet only when I am at least 90% sure to win the bet. Last August I bet with a friend that a couple of common friends would be married within a year. They are living together since 30 years and have 3 children, so my friend believed that I had no chance to win. Of course, I have a secret weapon. Last Sunday my other friend (the future groom) called me to ask if I would not like to pick mushrooms with him. We went in a public forest, and we picked two full bags of trumpets of the death and a few porcini mushrooms. In the way back to his car, I told him : - You know X ? - Yes. - He was living together with Y since 30 years and they married secretly last June. - No ? Why ? - Well, to benefit of a survivor's pension as the widow of a public servant you need to be married at least two years before you retire. *(I have to add here that both my friend and his girlfriend are public servants.)* - Oh ! B*st*rds ! I did not said anything else, but I think that he will not live long in sin from now, and that I will be rewarded for my good deed. Secret or not, a marriage has to be published. I have just to check the newspapers and wait. Have you done a good deed recently ?

Shame on you, you cheated to win. I lost a bet, I thought that my brother was going to re-marry before his birthday, but his birthday is tomorrow and it seems he has no intention to make the same mistake again.

To sin by omission is not a mortal sin. I have to add that there is no money involved with this bet. I generally don't bet any money. It is my first attempt at matchmaking, but I think that it will be a success. I don't know what happened to your brother, but I have several divorced friends that never wanted to marry again...

@topffer I did not bet money either, but I have to prepare a dinner for his daughter. My brother made a stupid choice and he wanted to marry a woman nobody liked. He has to blame nobody but himself.

@LadyDuck A lunch is not a big deal, it is the kind of bet I do usually... when I am quite sure to win. It is better that you did not influenced your brother's choice. Like you wrote, he can blame only himself.

I have not won yet, but I think that it is a matter of weeks/months, as they are older than me, and his girlfriend will retire in 3 years.

Sneaky little bugger. Nice trick! Now they will definitely have to get married. I also don't bet on anything unless I'm 99% sure. Haha. Am not a gambler as well but I take risks when I feel like it.

@topffer I don't bet money too. But occasionally I do it with friends especially when they insist on something I know is really true or not. And when they lose I treat ourselves with the money they lost.

I never bet money, and there is only a drink involved, but there is still a risk that they don't marry within the year and wait a little more.

@owstalaga That is nice. Take advantage of it when it is not too late : when they will realize that you never lose, they will no more bet with you.

So, what is the prize for winning the bet, and what is the cost of losing it?

I never bet any money. There is just a drink involved, which is not a lot for such an achievement. I should have bet a dinner in a restaurant, as I am quite sure to win.

@topffer So you are allergic to marriage and yet you trick these poor people into marriage just to win a bet ... and all you win is a drink?! You really are evil, aren't you?

HA! You certainly have a secret weapon!! And surely you would have that 90% chance of winning! What is the prize - what will your friend lose?

I wonder if he and his partner will see this as a good deed or not. I always tell people that they need to be the one with the rights to switch off the life-support machine. That message hits home pretty hard.

It is another argument, although you can designate the person you want to make this choice for you by a contract in France, and I know two friends who have preferred to choose their doctor than their partner. It is something that I can understand : it is a big responsibility, and it can be better to not involve your partner in it.

Glad about it. I needed you, desperately during 2000-2005 A good deed? me? recently? I have secretly devoured that cake which my wife brought for someone else because I do not like that "someone" coming to my place

@topffer Until now, wifey does not know about this fact. I have to tell her tomorrow before she finds out. Or even worse, before the "someone" arrives to have her cake. I mentioned my wife that I dont like this lady and better she should not invite her home. She has no manners and though she is doing her PHD in Computers, she doesnt even know how to behave with the mouse. Wifey said, that the cake is her favorite and so she has got it to serve her during the time she is around. Now, it should be no cake, no her here.

@thesids I don't want to enter in a family dispute. When someone gets under my skin, he/she realizes it quickly at my attitude, if he/she is not dumb.

It was not cricket to not buy another cake after you satisfied your hunger. I would have probably replaced it by another one that "someone" was not liking.

So they are finally doing it because of you. I guess that's really good deed by you. So you are going to win your bet too. I am bad at betting as I always do it in excitement in just 50% of assurance. So better I start betting like you when I am more sure about it. lol

It is their interest, but they are free to marry or not, and I have not won yet, but there is a good chance. I rarely bet, and only when I am quite sure to win.

Congratulations, TopEvil! You finally earned your adopted name! After you never carried through on your vow to have a day dedicated to Evil, I had almost lost hope in you, my brother! It has made me a very happy man to know that you can be just as Evil as the rest of our family when you are properly motivated! Uhm... so, brother, I can expect an invitation to the finest restaurant around as soon as you get paid for winning that bet, right?

I have not cheated, I just omitted to tell a detail. I have not yet won, but I think that I can hardly lose my bet. History also keeps major disasters/failures like volcanic eruptions or nuclear accidents.
