In Switzerland chestnuts are pretty popular. Most people like to roast chestnuts on a wooden fire and eat them hot accompanied by mulled wine. If you prefer, you can use chestnuts to make an easy, but delicious dessert, the Mont-Blanc (White Mountain). You need to boil the peeled chestnuts until they are soft enough to be puréed. Then you mix the purée with sugar syrup and a teaspoon of vanilla extract. When ready to serve the dessert, put a meringue on a small dessert dish, top the meringue with the purée and add some whipped cream. Have you ever tried this dessert?

If you made an extremely large one would it become an Everest?

I do not believe, the dessert was invented in Italy around 1400 and they gave the name of an Italian mountain, the highest in Europe.

I like them but my stomach does not, so I avoid roasted chestnuts. The dessert is also called "Vermicelles" in France and French Switzerland.

I've never tasted chestnuts, trees here are rare and the ones we do have need to be drought and heat tolerant.

I think there might be chestnut trees up in the northeastern states of the US but I'm not sure as I've never been there @LadyDuck

I cannot remember to have seen chestnuts trees in the United States. Here in southern Switzerland and North of Italy we have many.

@rebelann I have made a search, no this kind of chestnut trees do not grow in the United States, there are another variety, but the chestnuts are not so big and sweet. The biggest producer is China, followed by Turkey and then Italy.

It sure looks appetising. I like the idea of making a paste. I suppose we could do that with any other nuts too.

No I haven't but I love chestnuts and I have made a chestnut dessert with raspberry sauce which is lovely. We also often use chestnuts in recipes instead of mushrooms as my partner hates any sort of mushroom. Here you can buy pre-cooked, vacuum-packed chestnuts which are very handy!

Desserts are never really healthy, but this one is healthier than many cakes. After all it's only cream of chestnuts, a little meringue and whipped cream.
