Life Without A Car

Back in May I took the brave and very liberating decision to sell my car, this was driven by the fact that after we moved offices to a city centre location I was very rarely using it and as a family we could get by with just one car. Granted there are days when I wish I could just jump in the car rather then facing a cold and wet ten mile cycle to work, but these days are rare and I really wish I had ditched the car earlier.
Not only has the decision to sell the car help keep me fitter, it has also save me and the family a lot of money, as running a car is a very expensive business. All the car payments, maintenance, fuel and insurance amounts to quite a sum. These saving have helped make life a lot more comfortable although I do know a lot of people who think I am mad riding in all weather.
Could or do any of you guys live without a car? I know that distance from work is often a factor, myself I cycle 100+ miles a week to and from work in all weathers, which is not for the faint hearted.

I will probably have to take the same decision soon, as I am moving in a half pedestrian street in a house with no garage, and it will be difficult for me to park my car at less than half a mile of my home. I do quite all my shopping near my home, but I still need my car times to times for my work : I would not like to have to rely on coworkers, so I am hesitating.

@mrtoffee It is more easier as you will have still a car at home. I have already looked to rent a car. It can be interesting for me if I need a car only 30 days/year. I think I will sell mine, as life is made more and more difficult for car owners if you live in the center of a city (mine has a project to forbid completely cars in my area, except 4 hours/day for residents).

@topffer wow your city is banning cars, thiat pretty extreme, mind I have to say as a cyclist I would like to ban cars at times lol. Best of luck what ever you decide, it sounds like selling you car and renting one as needed is the way forward. Here in the UK we have cars that you can rent for a few hours or days in the cities.
