Memory Loss

Have you ever lost your memory for something not related to alcohol? Not just a night or a morning, but days on end of no memory?
I lost my ability to make short term memories for a week when I was 16. If you have ever seen the movie "50 First Dates" it was a lot like that, where I was able to talk to people and remember long term memories, but retained nothing.
Fortunately it came back when I was leaving the hospital. Also, unlike movies where people suddenly 'wake up' and panic because their surroundings have changed, it wasn't like that at all. You have a certain degree of physical memory, and your body knows. I just accepted that I had been in an accident, since my last memory was turning onto that road, and my newest memory was being moved in a wheelchair to my next destination. The knowledge that a week had passed was only learned later.
Of course, that was a severe case, so probably not many have those stories. I just wanted to share.

I am glad that your memory came back, it must be so scary to be in a serious accident. I have seen the discussions with Rosekitty below. I am sorry for your headache, I know that this is painful, my husband has a constant severe headache, but the doctors cannot find the cause. I lost my memory for only three to four days. I was attacked in Miami by two guys who wanted to steal my purse (they did), I tried to resist, I lost my balance and I hit my head on the pavement and fainted for several minutes. It was not a nice experience. Now I always feel uncomfortable when I see people behind me.

@Rosekitty I had not even the time to be scared, but I was so bad for at least one week after what happened.

Yes, a perpetual headache from that day. It changes strength and location, so it can't get numb. I think I have had only 4 days without a headache since then, and the accident was in April 1999. Anxiety and stress brings the conditions back. So I had to kill my emotions off to some degree. I had breathing difficulties until I got my stress under control, where I couldn't get a deep breath no matter how hard I tried, and it felt like suffocating. Someone that gets severe asthma attacks said that their attacks are not even close to what I described, so it must be worse than that. Fortunately I don't get them like that anymore, but I had to deal with that for about 6 years.
The muscle that controls swallowing is impaired and stops working occasionally, so I end up choking nearly every meal. The last few days it hasn't happened, so I'm hoping this is some kind of improvement. Fortunately the location the food sticks is low enough that I can still breathe. Good thing, I've had food stuck for over an hour before. It can get really painful. Aside from that, I lost some words back then, but I have them back now. Just no memory of ever using them in my past.

@OneOfMany oh i am so sorry..stress is really bad so hopefully you keep your spirits up
I'm not certain if you told me, but are you on disability?
Hope so..if i get anxiety attacks my throat constricts and i forget to breathe so i kinda have an idea of your throat problem..i know try to deep breathe and avoid stress as much as possible.
I had an abusive last relationship that got me that way so i'm happy to just be alone now.
Hugs dear friend..off to watch tv and then sleep. talk tomorrow

@Rosekitty Nope, I'm not on disability and had no breaks through college as well. I had a super severe handicap.
I forgot one of the affects: I have double vision that I have to control to be single. As soon as I get tired it's double.

Rather than getting the memory back, I got the ability to record the memories. I lost that week of memories, but it probably wasn't anything I wanted to remember.

I'm okay with pain, but if I kept the memory of the accident I probably would be too scared to drive. Although my imagination filled in the gaps.

That must have been frightening. I've never had that experience and hope I never do but i know it happens with head injuries.

Well I don't know how I felt about it that week. That entire week was erased after all.

Wow that must have been scary, glad you're ok. I don't have a great short term memory, which drives me crazy.

Thanks. My memory is pretty good, though I had to work on my ability to remember names of people when they are introduced to me. It took a lot of time, but now I have a trick I can use. I just associate that person with a face of someone else I'm aware of with the same name.

@lilnana1111 I works really well. I have been teaching it to people and they are getting better at names.

@OneOfMany I'll have to try that trick because I'm terrible at names.

I have not seen the movie. I am sorry you were in such a horrendous accident when you were that young and yet I am of course glad you are here. I am dealing with memory loss issues with my Mom now. And anger. The anger. Sometimes I wonder who this person is that is supposed to be my Mom.
