When the full price is too much...

...you haggle! People here generally like to do that. Not just at flea markets, but also when buying things like furniture and gadgets. When you go to a foreign country, sometimes knowing how to haggle can avoid you from getting ripped off by merchants. Of course, you have to know when it's appropriate to haggle. You don't do that for a leather jacket at a department store, for instance. Do you always haggle to get a good bargain? Anyone can offer tips to haggle like a pro?

I'm a pro at haggling. I have all the tricks worked out and even have code words with my husband as part of the performance. His favourite technique is to throw some money at me (the amount he knows is my target price) and storm out saying he's had 'enough of all this nonsense' and then he leaves the shop and hides down the road whilst I tell the shop keeper that's all I've got and I don't have much time. So far it worked every time and was really good fun.

Lovely. "partners in crime" In all seriousness, I can never be any pro at that. My wife is somewhat good at that but I can never learn the trade.

@thesids I learned some great lines from Indian friends. My particular favourite is "My friends will NEVER respect me if I pay you that much". That's a hard one for any seller to argue with. I've also done the "I'm buying this for my boss to give his wife for Christmas. If I don't get a great price he's not going to be impressed".

Haha that's cute. I like the money throwing part. I might just try that someday, you know. But hmm...I guess that wouldn't work if you enter the same store again in the future and do the same thing?

know the value 'f the merchandise 'head 'f time. i've e'n bought power tools from lowe's coz i've gone in with print-outs (yepperz, i've a dumb phone...) 'f what others're sellin' it fer. most places'll typically match it if'n ya get the head'f the department. the 'underlings' 've no say in the matter.

Good advice. That's why I like to do a little bit of research first before buying stuff - online or offline. It really helps.

I prefer to go where there are fixed prices. If I like something I will buy as I would be ready to spend that much

@cahaya1983 Somehow I feel all these bargains are not really bargains. If you pay less then you are paying a price at which the seller can afford to sell it to you but if others pay more then they lose.

That's a good way of looking at it too. I'm the type that wouldn't miss the opportunity to get a good deal on things that I like though, so haggling can be a good thing.

I'm not sure I understand your point. They are not bargains because some customers pay more and others pay less?

At the public market when i see that the merchants are so poor looking , i don't haggle anymore for the produce they are selling . At least i am helping them that way for having an income .

Yes you have to know when it's appropriate to haggle and when it's not. It's business after all, and the sellers would certainly want to make a decent profit from it.

I am hopeless at haggling and I find it an odd practice anyway as you are only dropping the seller to the price he is willing to sell for anyway though no doubt some would sell to us at the higher price if we just accepted the deal and didn't try to haggle - I prefer to see a price tag up front.

Yeah I think it's only wise to haggle if you know the market price of that item, otherwise even if they put the price tag they could still cheat you. I've seen some like that.

I don't mind someone haggling to get a better price but as you said sometimes its not appropriate like in a department store when it has a set price. I can understand when the item is damaged that is a little different but when it is in perfect condition and retailed appropriately it bugs me a bit. Like walmart for example has fairly priced stuff but if they happen to have something for sale and it is damaged they will discount it more if you ask.

@cahaya1983 We haven't had it happen often stores don't like to give anything more than they have to. Now you have one more haggling trick up your sleeve for next time because most times people don't want something if the box is messed up lol.

Oh wow I didn't know they could give a discount for that. I used to shop at Walmart back in the States. I don't know if it's possible to do that here though.

@lokisdad I'll remember to ask next time. Usually though whenever I find a damaged item and tell them about it they'd just replace it with a new one they have in stock and so the price remains the same.

Sometimes I rather go to the places where nobody can haggle. At least I know that everyone pays the same price as me, and I will not feel bad thinking that I have overpaid.

That's smart too. It would be frustrating knowing that someone bought the exact same thing that we did for a much cheaper price.

I hate haggle. It's not that I have so much money or anything else, it's just hard for me to do it. Sometimes I feel pity to the seller to haggle a price. But when I don't haggle then people told me I can actually get half price for this stuff, it makes feel bit disappointed. Then I never haggle anymore because I'm not good on it. I rely on husband to do it. He is good on it, though sometimes he can haggle too much which makes feel guilty watching the seller's face -but he always win!

I understand. I don't go over the top when I haggle, plus at the end of the day you know that it's still up to the merchant to sell you that item at whatever price he/she wants. I agree with you, not everyone is a pro at haggling!

Oh I'm sorry to hear that. It's easy to be cheated especially when you're a tourist and not familiar with how the merchants conduct their business. Buying stuff online is good too, sometimes you can even get a better deal online than in the physical stores.

yes, haggle with price when you think it is necessary especially in flea market or other stores that sold merchandise except for malls or supermarkets where they have a fixed price already.

Yeah here it's impossible to haggle at the department stores. Even in the bazaars not all merchants are willing to reduce the price.

I'm horrible at haggling so I don't really bother with it. Plus most of the places I shop at are ones where you don't haggle, like a department store.

Yeah I don't haggle when I go to dept stores either. But if I visit outdoor bazaars and places like that I do like to haggle to get a good deal.
