How I Spent My Weekend

The last time I went to a film festival was in Los Angeles. I took my students as a field trip. We had a blast. So when I saw that my favorite theater in south Orange County was having a film festival, I bought an all access pass.
Friday night was glorious. I arrived early and joined the reception. I chatted with an older lady who was sitting alone. It turned out her eighteen year-old grandson was the organizer and producer of the festival. I was blown away. He grew up around movie people. His father is Andy Fickman, a well-known director in Hollywood. His mother is a well-known agent.
The festival consisted of movie shorts. There were over 1,000 films submitted. There were around 100 shown over the three days of screening. The audience scored each film at the end of each genre, and a short discussion with the film makers took place. I loved this part.
There was also a panel discussion with biggies in the industry (it helps to have connections). Many in the audience were new to the industry and learned a great deal. I have never been in the movie business, but I am an integral part of it. I'm in the audience.
It was exciting and exhausting. I will go to next year’s second annual Laguna Film Festival. I will also shop around for others to attend, now that I found this to be a fun way to spend the weekend. But next time, I’m wearing warmer clothing. It was chilly in there.

You are right about that. Keeping my eyes open really helped.

If you enjoy movies, you would like it too. Some festivals have full length films, this one had shorts. I like them all.

@ElizabethWallace I will have to see if there is one near me or at least close enough to visit.

I went to eight of the genre showings. Each showing had between six and ten shorts. The shorts ran between 60 seconds and 30 minutes in length. Fatigue is the reason I did not go on Sunday. But I loved the event and will go next year for sure.

I grew up with movies, and even had actors and kids of people in the industry in some of my classes at school.

@ElizabethWallace That kind of thing happens all they time.. either the a/c is not sufficient for the kind of crowd or too much.. And if you accidentally sit near a vent it could chill you to the bones.

@sofssu Layers of clothing make the most sense. We can take them off when they are not needed and add them when it is too cold.

I made the mistake of not having double layer sleeves. Some of the short films did not have large audiences, so the a/c in the theater was not balanced with the body heat there.

I did, and will go to this one and others in the future. The one in Napa sounds like fun.

I have only been to two. One was huge, the other rather small (in attendance, not quality or variety). They were both wonderful. You don't have to be anyone special to go. Just buy a ticket.

I always enjoy the movies and everything that's related to it. Film Festivals abound here too, I just need to set aside time to join and enjoy them. I am inspired now, after reading your post.

That's great. Just remember to take a sweater or light jacket, in case the theater is cold, like this one.
