What about odd nicknames?

Since I found out that a woman neighbor introduces herself as "Pookie," I have been wondering how an adult chooses to go through life with a nickname like that. Unless her parents named her that, I wonder how it got there and stuck? I won't ask though, since it might embarrass us both. My wife knew a British woman who had relative called "Yud." Maybe @Jabo can explain that one. Some men are called "Butch" as boys and end up at 40 as "Butch." I was Jimmy as a little boy, became Jim as a teenager and one of my daughter's teenage friends called me Jimmy Boy for some reason. Mostly, I am Jim except on checks and writing sites. Do you live with a strange nickname or know someone who does? Photo is mine shown just because.

People here in the south tend to have strange nicknames. String, Chicken man, Rooster, Rabbit, Coot (baby talk for "cute") and Doodle are some common ones around here.

Oh yes, I know about those southern nicknames, but I would try to abandon some.

@JamesHxstatic Trouble is, by the time the person realizes he/she hates the nickname, it's too late because everyone already calls them by that!

At least she is happy with her own nickname - nothing worse than being inflicted with one by friends but hating it

Why a photo of ducks James? Yes, my family still call me "ducky" but only in private, I have a short name it's not difficult to call me Anna.
