Sometimes you can pick an English name that sounds a bit like your Chinese name or you could just pick one of somebody you admire. But it's always a good idea to ask some native English people - like me - before you make a final decision. We can help avoid that you pick something really embarrassing.

Few days ago I'd like give myself the name called Francis. But I find that so many people are called it.In China, people's names are different usually. So I hesitate.I find many foreigner who speak English usually have the same name.By the way,can 'duolaf' be a name?It just sounds like something I know.

@duolaf - Francis might be popular because of the new Pope. He's a very charismatic man. I would like to suggest 'Douglas' as being fairly close to your Duolaf. It's slightly old fashioned but it's a good dependable name.

@duolaf - Sorry - I just need to check since it's not clear. Are you male or female? Francis is a man's name - that's why I suggested Douglas. If you meant Frances (that's the female name), then I'd make a different suggestion - like Dora or Dulcie.

Hi, making English names does not have any rules. Its just a matter of being comfortable. Sample names will be Amy, Emily, Ann, Annie, Julie, Grace and Stacey.

There are many lists of names on the Internet together with their meanings. Just search for "baby names" and you will find plenty of sites. You could choose a name which sounds something like your Chinese name, choose a name which has a similar meaning to your Chinese name (or a meaning which you feel suits your personality) or simply choose a name which you like the sound of.
