I like to watch "old style" crime and detective stories. My friends know, so I received as gifts, several detective series on DVDs. One of my favorite is Sherlock Holmes, the London based detective, created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. I have the TV series produced by British company ITV Granada, starring Geremy Brett. In my opinion he is a good Sherlock Holmes, very close to the description given by Conan Doyle. The episodes are numerous, enough to keep me busy for many evenings. Now that the days are cold, there is nothing better than to watch an old detective story , curled up on the couch, drinking mulled wine. Do you like old crime series? Have you watched the BBC series 'Sherlock'? It's a modern day interpretation of some of the classic Conan Doyle stories. It is absolutely brilliant.

Well, we the non-native English speaking community are having problem in following it. It may be brilliant but there are many things we are not even able to understand. However, we were able to follow the one with Geremy Brett.

It is completely different. This is a classic series and not a contemporary adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes detective stories.

I also have this series, but I prefer (a lot) Geremy Brett, simply because the stories represented are the real stories written by Conan Doyle, while the series of Rathborne is completely invented. Do you remember "The voice of the terror", set during the Nazi war, of course cannot be written by Conan Doyle.

I do not like the series with Basil Rathbone because the stories are completely invented and no one is from the real stories written by Conan Doyle. I found this pretty ridiculous.

Yes, I do. I enjoy Agatha Christie books too, although hers are much shorter. I have a few Sherlock Holmes books, and they are quite thick. I don't think I've ever seen any movies, but I could be mistaken. Did you know that it wasn't until those books came out that policemen began to keep the crime scenes clean, and do detective work to try to figure out the murderer? That's a large reason why Jack the Ripper wasn't ever found. The law back then wasn't taught the proper way to determine all the things we take for granted now. I think that's pretty cool. It makes me wonder whether Arthur Conan Doyle wasn't inspired by a higher power in order to help the real life police in their work.

@LadyDuck Not sure that the police identified Jack the Ripper as all the police archives are accessible today (at least the archives not destroyed by lack of space : it is often the case in France for justice and police archives). I was interested by the DNA analysis made last year, but at the end it looks that they were not good and that Jack the Ripper is not yet identified.

Jack the Ripper was never "judged" this does not mean that they do not know who he was. As usual when someone is very important, the police close both eyes.

Over recent years I have gradually started to watch more and more old television series as they are rerun. This was something that I would never do in the past but the lack of decent shows nowadays has made this a viable alternative.

The only Sherlock Holmes series that I've watched is the series of movies starring Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes. I won't watch anything else, because to me, Basil Rathbone IS Sherlock Holmes. He really embodied the character perfectly.

I have watched the ones with Basil Rathbone and believe me, Geremy Bretts is a better Holmes, not to mention that the series is based on the real Conan Doyle novels and not invented as the ones of Basil Rathbone.
