Mass media persuades us that we must have certain things like designer clothes, expensive watches, brand car, branded cell phone, designer house etc. in order to be considered for Status Symbol in society. Many a times, we fall in the trap (may be housewives) due to mass influence (my neighbour has, why not I).
Do you give a lot of attention to these kinds of things. Are you influenced by this movements? Please quote one incident or two.

I don't know if it's just true for the people I know or for Candians on the whole, but outward displays of wealth tend to be frowned upon here.
I've heard of friends embarrassing their relatives in other countries when they visit, by telling others how little they spent on what they're wearing. It seems like here there's more status in spending little.

I do not know about Canada and USA. But in India, this mass influence (media) and neighbours' influence or influence through relatives (they purchased so why not I) seem to be the order of the day and because of this most of the time, things not required are purchased, sometimes going out of the way and they land up in all sorts of trouble.
Thank you very much for your interesting response.

I have to many things going on in my life to care about such a thing as brand articals so you pay 300 dollers for a shirt big woop I would say ok so what. I tend to use money on more important things. I feel as if hey wear what you want to wear dont do something just because its the rave for that month. I never go with the flow on things like that but I must say my style is my own but it works I may dress like a punk rocker but I was knowen through out my school and when I was there it is nothing but brand names so that shows you can achive status without brand names I was well knowen and liked at my school All the staff had me doing errons for them and I was always the pet. I never have and never will have brand things to wear I do it so I gain popularity.
