Communication in the Workplace

Some people are hard to get through using the email channel. They either don't check emails, or don't bother replying, or are just plain rude over emails. Speak to them face-to-face. You'll get better mileage. And then there are those who are the opposite. In face-to-face conversations, they don't listen. They talk a whole lot, nag a whole lot, but just don't listen. What do we do with these? Converse with them using the email platform. Highlight the key words we want them to pay attention to. And if necessary, keep Management in the loop. That usually greases their wheels quite well.

I freelance at a few things so I have bosses all over the place, even on the other side of the world. Ninety percent of my communication with them is via email, the rest through the phone. One of them is nice in spurts, but tends to ignore emails otherwise. One is very good with email and we get into some interesting conversations. Everyone is different.

Absolutely. Different people view and use different means of communication differently. I also have noticed how some people use the email system craftily to their advantage. They insist on communicating only over email, and refuse to speak to another colleague or subordinate face-to-face. They only answer emails from people who they favour, and hold back responses to persons who they don't like.

@yeezermac I've seen that happen, too, and wonder about the boss who sometimes ignores my email. At times, it's the subject that he doesn't want to talk about, I'm sure. It's harder to speak face to face for some people (myself included), so I tend to give a little slack to those who prefer email.

I am ridiculously awful at remembering things. I'm not joking. I'd forget my head if it weren't attached. For me, having an email gives me an effective "to do" list. I can check, uncheck, star, mark and flag my emails and make it easier for myself not to forget what needs done! So for me, email is better. Unless you just want to say hi.

It is a good way for some, but not the best of everyone, IMHO. Have you ever spoken to a person who loves the sound of their own voice so much that nothing you say to them face-to-face can ever get through? Face-to-face communication is an ideal to be aspired to if and only if the receiver of that information is an equally willing and able participant. Some people don't want to listen because they're too stubborn. Some people can't understand you because their level of cognition is lower than, or different from yours. There is no one best way for everyone. There are many ways of communication, and they work differently with different people.

Here in my work , there will only be two ways in which i can reach my customer. If not through call , the only other option will be emails.
