Another myLot rule question, help please!

I have another question. At some point a while ago there was a discussion where it was stated that we 'are not allowed to use names of other members in our discussions'. I thought, OK, another weird rule that makes no sense but I'll play the game.
Now that I've been paying more attention and getting involved in more discussions, I see people using all kinds of myLotters names in their discussions.
What I do know for a fact is that is before the ink dries on this I will get responses from two myLot 'experts' who will give me the correct answer. I can't put their names (or tag them?) in here since I am not sure it it is against the rules or not.
But one is a owl and the other is a wreck....is that clear enough? LOL!

The answer is not to rely on what others say but to read the rules oneself (again, if you need to!). The rule in question is:
New discussions directed towards only one or a small group of other members - You should use private messaging to chat back and forth with your myLot friends.
In other words, if you were asking a question or saying something specifically to one (or a few) members, rather than addressing yourself to the whole community, though mentioning a name or names), that would be inappropriate.
In other words, you can post a discussion and include @username in it, for example: " @soandso said ..." or "I wonder if @thingummyjig knows anything about this" just as long as it's not DIRECTLY addressing a particular person or persons, like " @whatshername: can you message me, please" (or something)!.

@AbbyGreenhill No, because you aren't addressing the user directly, you are simply 'mentioning' him/her.
Bubblews had a fairly similar, but more comprehensive rule about 'mentioning' and I wonder if that's what's caused the doubt in your mind. There, it was considered a violation to 'mention' more than between three and five names (the number wasn't stated but the 'unofficial' word from staff at the time was that it was between three and five).

@owlwings That's why I assumed, so I'm glad it's out here for others who might not be sure. Thanks.

I do read the rules, though not everyone does. I understand that part of the rule. I read it - but I am talking about something like
"I was interested in a cooking discussion started by @owlwings and I thought I would like to give an opposing view."
Would that be against the rule??

@PhredWreck I was wondering something similar.. If / when she is redundant over there, would she sneak her way over here. Naturally, I am sure that she will be warmly welcomed

@PhredWreck nope, different @nameless, the one there is more mature and more of a rule follower. The one here got in trouble for some violations and was still living with her parents. I wondered the same when I saw the name.

I agree with the two responses you got. It's not that you cannot mention someone, but the discussion must not be a private conversation between two people. And you cannot call someone out in a discussion or say "this is why people like so-and-so are so stupid" or other ways of flaming users.

I think it is more why you are addressing these people. It's ok to address them but not to attack or say bad things about them. And not directing a discussion to just a few as @Owlwings says. Have a good day.

I had thanked someone for inspiration or commented on them in passing before.

That's sounds like it's not allowed if you read the comments from Owl above.

@AbbyGreenhill well it wasn't just a "thanks bob for inspiration" it was a piece inspired by bob, and I mentioned a thanks in the body of it, I think that sounded ok

I don't know because I am new in here also. but don't really make sense. In the old neighborhood we could tag them in our conversations and replies and comments. It helped draw attention if you were wanting them to specifically see some comment you had made.

Ms Abby ( @AbbyGreenhill ) - I appreciated your post here. As to those who might decide to install my "username" in their own discussions, I can let them know beforehand that I approve of that, but with one condition - They must spell my username better than I spelled it, OK?

I can see if you attack a person in a post this can be really bad by using their name. But on the other hand if you are talking directly to the person who wrote it I don't see harm in this one. I think it should be OK to either use their @name or their name. I had some people direct a comment to me and use my name. I didn't find it was bad or wrong and to me ti was sort of nice to be addressed by my name.

It seems to work okay and does not bother anyone. Since we are not on a character count here it also is not padding your post.
