buy or rent?

I'm fuzzy on the benefits of buying a condo versus renting an apartment. I do not deal well with homeowner's associations cause of their rules and regs and God attitude. Would you buy an apartment if you had the opportunity? Would you buy a town house if the town house was attached to another town house? Does living that close to a neighbor bother you? I'm looking at all aspects of housing and weighing each possibility.

Honestly, I don't care for the idea of condos. By the time you pay the condo association fees, you're likely paying more than typical rent or even for a mortgage on many homes. It's just not worth it. Especially when you take the privacy concerns into consideration. If it were me, I'd buy a house or rent a place.

The privacy aspect and sharing walls with another party bugs me, too.

@enlightenedpsych2 renting has its perks. Especially if you don't plan to stay in the region very long. Another perk of renting is that the landlord is responsible for maintaining the property. If the hot water heater breaks or the plumbing or rep of need repairs, then you're not financially responsible; the landlord is. Buying a proeprty usually takes you five years to recoup on your investment, and you're responsible for the maintenance on it.

@enlightenedpsych2 it really depends on what you want. While you might not see perks in it, someone else might. It all depends on each individual circumstance and what their lodging needs/goals look like.

We like to settle down and don't like moving around. So if we have enough money, most Chinese still prefer to buy a house rather than renting one. As the renting fee can be higher and higher and it is not stable. Besides, the real estate is an important investment. Depositing money into the bank will not give you extra bonus. Whereas having a house may make you rich.

Much as I would love to be able to buy, as with a large percentage here in the UK it's just not an option. I have lived in a high rise flat before and didn't much like it, but am now in a semi detached (one out of two houses connected together) and mostly find it OK. Yes we do hear our neighbours occasionally, but we're pretty much used to that
