Many kids today refusing to watch older movies and listening to older songs

I was a 90's kid and when I was a kid I actually watch movies from the 80's, 70's ,60,s and I even watched the Wizard of Oz which is a 1930's movies. I have an open mind to watch movies older than me when I was a kid. On the other hand I had seen kids who will refuse to watch even a movie from the early 2000's. I find it really disturbing that many kids from this generation refuses to listen to songs older than them an movies older than them. It is so depressing that an old movie have to be remaked before someone from this generation to watch it. My childhood is in the 90's but I know who the Beatles is and I know who Marilyn Monroe is. I listened to Linkin Park and Simple Plan on my teens but I do know who were popular decades before me. Remember when many kids at Twitter asked who is Paul McCartney is because they have no idea who he is after he had a duet with Rihanna?

Is it that kids don't want to, or is it that parent's don't expose their kids to the "old" generation so much these days? Back then the tv was pretty much the same for everyone - we got whatever the stations threw at us, even the old stuff. Now everyone has options as to what they want to watch - and whenever they want - on whatever gadget they choose - it's all literally customized. If kids want to watch a favorite cartoon, they can watch that and only that - but will have tunnel vision to that because they aren't forced to see anything else except what they want to watch. We, however, have exposed our kids to what "we" like too - so they know some of the "old" stuff!

@CaptAlbertWhisker I know if I had not seen certain things from TV, I may not have known otherwise. Whatever my parents wanted to see, that's what we ALL saw. In a sense I was forced to see what I didn't want to see - but it was either that or nothing at all. But I ended up liking these other/older movies and such. Kids may not appreciate the older stuff because well, most likely have never been exposed to such genres or have seen someone else appreciate them. They've always lived in a world of "their" options only. I often hate the remakes!

@much2say Kids loves the songs "Moves like Jagger" and "Marvin Gaye" I bet they don't know who the hell Mick Jagger and Marvin Gaye are. They like those songs but they don't know who mere being tributed by those songs.

They should be more access to older stuff knowing the existing of internet. The fact that the main influences of their favorite singers and actors are from older generations should be enough reason for them to try looking back to the past. I rarely see kids who likes older songs and movies unless its a damn remake.

Hello Captain The kids today are hooked on to the internet and they can find the older ones there too, but then, I think it is their peers who force them to make the calls. I mean, if there is very little of the older movies being telecast on Tele or even watched by the parents, the kids would never appreciate them. This is because these movies from the past seem so very slow paced and without those CGI when compared to the ones today. We never had any INOX when we were growing up, but today's kids know only those INOX and multiplexes of today. So I would blame it on the changing times, the tech also.

@CaptAlbertWhisker And these remakes too make a mess of this. I mean, the originals are almost better, but then, they add some more of effects or a twist in the story line. But they forget that the acting that was on the original, today, we lack some of those artists. There are a lot of remakes going on in Indian scenario but the fact is only 1% of them are successful. The plot is tweaked on most and the actors nowhere are even comparable to the original players. Now, when remakes with things to lure in today's Generation are around and in abundance, one barely wants to watch the oldies (the original).

@thesids Kids are very shallow, they rely to much on HD resolution and modern CGI effects to appreciate a movie. I just saw a teen whining because her parents purchased an SD movie instead of an HD one.

There are older movies with great CGI like movies from 90's and early 2000's. Yeah because its liked by their parents and they think their parents are not cool, it makes them dislike an older thing even if its actually recent. Songs from 90's and 2000's sounds the same as recent songs. One of the most popular singers today which is Meghan trainor have 1950's sounding songs.

I am not sure about the kids nowadays. When I was a kid, I didn't know many old movies or songs, because my parents didn't watch or listen to them. I started to listen to some old songs when my friends recommended them to me. I knew Beatles and Marilyn Monroe when I was in high school or college, I think. For my children, as I am always singing them the songs I know, hence they only got to know those "old songs" so far, until they explore more on their own.

Internet should be a way to make the newer generations discover the older songs and movies. I am glad many modern movies adds older songs to their soundtrack.

If only kids have the same appreciation. I just saw a kid who will refuse movies not created below 2010.

In my country, children sing older song. Even, it is so sad, because there is a few children songs. I don't know why there is no composer who create children songs lately.

@CaptAlbertWhisker It is so sad, I think. Most of parents in my country also do not know English so they do not control their children that they were sing a song that is not properly for their age.

@srisahara Yeah a song being in English should not be an excuse for parental censorship.

More parents should be like your kids. Many of these kids today don't know what they were missing.

The kids have to stick to what their friends are watching. Once in a while, you will see the trend is to watch oldies, and suddenly every kid in school watch Charlie Choplin. It is peer pressure.

It is kinda funny that old hairstyles are now popular to kids but they wont watch movies from eras those hairstyles were invented.

It is a trend which has been there for generations. I didn't like the songs of my father's generation and my children are not liking mine.

I think 90's kids are more open minded about the past. Most 90's kid know who the Beatles are. Also an old 50's song charted in the 90's.

Kids right are really different. They are more on computers and gadgets and the louder the music the better it is for them.

The fact they have internet means they have ability to research from the past now. Its easier to find older content online yet they still prefer what is recent even if its trash

That's true. But I don't think it's their fault. Sometimes it's not so easy for children to get the idea of older movies or songs.
