Does anyone have experience with having their credit history, criminal records, etc. being considered when they have applied for jobs before?

I have had background checks done on me as I worked with children. As long as you have nothing to hide then they aren't a big deal. I have always thought background checks seemed dumb... I mean, it only lets employers know if you have been CAUGHT committing crimes. What if someone is a psycho serial killer but has a squeaky clean record because they have never been caught?

Agreed....i completely see the necessity behind it. I guess for the position i was applying for the amount of info seemed a tad extensive and intrusive.

Yes, to some extent, a lot of jobs I've had since they are dealing with people and caring for others required background checks-but I can't say anyone has ever asked for a credit history for me re. a job though:)

If you have never done anything against the law than you have nothingto worry about.

But sometimes life happens and there are things that happen. I guess you just have to be ready to explain some things.

I had mine checked too as I applied and got a job in finance. I am glad I am not fan of credit cards!

I guess it would depend on the type of job. Perhaps a bank job would want your credit history and many jobs require a criminal record check

Of course, there are more stringent checks than the ones you have mentioned. Today I overheard the manager in the next department sharing the background check on a candidate. This candidate does not have any bad records, but is currently holding 2 part time jobs. They are discussing whether to offer the job to him.

not sure what you mean, what could be more stringent than the background check I mentioned?

I don't know how many background checks I have had to have done. It could be because I have worked in health care all of my adult life. I have been out of health care for over a decade, but surprise, surprise, I am now majoring in Alternative Medicine. Just cannot get away from it! 9/11 is why there has been such an increase in background checks. My credit is awful, I think it is ridiculous to check credit for a job, unless you are an accountant or it is a finance job. Often, people have bad credit for lack of finding a job and being unable to pay the bills on a regular basis.

@elizawallner No, I did not know that. I can imagine even if someone is a few days late and that showing up, it must not do too much for their credibility.
