Cat Fights

I have four cats. Sammie came to us from a neighbor who rescued him from the cold and was looking for a loving home for him to go to. My cat Cinder had recently passed and I wanted another cat, but I didn't want a kitten. Shortly there after, my youngest daughter, Marlyna, brought home a kitten. The kitten was the runt of the litter and she said she rescued it from the mouth of a dog. My heart broke so I allowed her to bring the little one home. We named her Mynx. Sammie and Mynx got along perfectly fine. Sammie pretty much became 'Daddy' to Mynx. They would lay together and Sammie would wash Mynx's face. My Mom then brought home another kitten that her cousin rescued. We named him Smores. My Mom's cousin couldn't keep him because her husband is allergic to cats. Then, in the dead of winter, my sister contacted me about a 9 year old house cat that one of her co-workers banned to the outside because of a divorce and taking it out on the cat. So my sister rescued it but he needed a home. His name is Titan. Titan and Smores fight all the time! It is driving me nuts. I thought with time they would learn to live with one another but it hasn't happened yet. Titan rules the upstairs and chases any animal that comes upstairs away. He is a very loving cat towards me and the kids but not when the other animals are around. He gets very mean and look out if you happen to be walking by when he is near another animal, mostly Smores. Titan doesn't lash out at me or the kids, but Smores does. My oldest daughter, Rayann was trying to get down the steps to go to the bathroom and Smores and Titan were in the middle of a hissing match and Smores attacked my daughters leg as she walked by. I have tried spraying them with water, but it hasn't made a bit of difference. I don't know what else to do. I really don't want to give Titan up because he is very lovie and I love the attention that I get from him at night. But Smores was here first so I feel that I need to find Titan a home. Is there anything else I can try to get them to be able to live together in peace?

I agree that Smores was at home first, he is the one who must stay. I am sorry about Titan, but I believe there is nothing you can do to stop their fights.

That is what I was afraid of. I wonder if I got Smores fixed if it would change anything.

@kborman That was going to be my question, are the animals all neutered? Titan, being old, may have some arthritis going on that makes him cross and Smores senses that he is not strong. I would be one who would try to keep them all. I have heard of putting something on them so that they all smell alike but I do not remember what that would be. I may go look it up.

@GardenGerty Let me know if you find anything - I just did a quick search, but didn't find anything yet.

i can't offer any, just that titan was probably an only pet. it's interesting to me, though, that there are older cats that fight kittens and kittens unafraid of older cats and male cats that adopt and nurture younger cats.

We also brought a pup into the mix last Christmas and Sammie lays with him too and washes his face. Smores was a kitten when we brought him into the house he's almost 2 years old now and he is definitely big enough to hold his own. Although Smores did get a nice wound on his leg once. Maybe now that he is healed, he is out for revenge.

Everyone around me has their own cats, so I'm afraid they would all run into the same problems.

Poor cats. My two adult senior male cats fight all the time when they wrestle on the ground, or even on my bed--even when they were younger. Maybe give them a time out and separate them as a gentle punishment. Have you thought speaking to your vet about this problem?

@kborman You mean the chat whisperer on Animal Planet? I believe it is. I've posted a cat-related post here a few weeks ago. And someone mentioned it to me! Oh, poor Titan!

@KristenH I don't know, I think the show was called 'Cat from Hell' - some guy would go in and make the cats good again. My daughter used to watch it, but we don't have cable anymore.

Never really thought about speaking to the vet. Wonder if that guy is still doing his cat show. He was like a cat whisperer. He would help cats overcome their issues in the household. They pretty much are separated - Titan never leaves the upstairs except to let us know he is out of food.

So sorry poor titan would be homeless. You know my dogs would fight too but when they do I spank their mouth and talk to them about that and I think they understood me. For the past months there were no more fights in the house Try talking to Titan and Smores. Maybe they need a little talk from you and a slight spanking

I don't want Titan to be homeless. I just think he needs a family all to himself. I don't think he likes sharing with other animals.

No, I cannot - I don't find it entertaining and I don't get joy out of it. I'm seeking suggestions on how to possibly fix the situation.

Well I know the 3 I had all got along before bringing Titan into the house, so I know what one has to go. I just hope I can find him a good home.

@kevin1877uk Titan has been in the house since the end of January 2015 and I think he is at least 9 years old. Sammie is probably older than Titan maybe by 2 years give or take. Smores is around 2 years and Mynx is about 1 year.

Cats sure want their territory and now. They are all fixed? Sometimes you just need to separate the warring parties for a while and let them look at each other and get used to their smells but not able to touch. We took in a Craigslist cat. She was not well socialized so she is a Lynx Point to the growling max. Whoops. She thinks she belongs outside. I'm not sure about that as winter comes on.

I have two that still need fixed. The two youngest. Mynx just made me mad, she jumped up on the counter and sprayed against a bag. This stuff is driving me nuts! I'm going to pull out all my hair for sure.
