My Word Came Back To Bite Me

It's funny how you say things in your younger years that come back to bite you later on. I had such a moment earlier today when I was trying to open the sealed cap on a seasoning I just bought. I tried & tried but couldn't peel the darn thing off so I had to go and get a knife and slice it through before I could manage to get it open. I heard my mother saying to me..."wait until you get older and can't open things". I remember how my mom used to save things she couldn't open until someone came to visit and help her. I used to roll my eyes when she would hand me a jar of pickles and say "please open these for me before you go". Back in those days I never had the understanding but there does come a day when being able to open things becomes a challenge. Today, I had to suck it up and admit my mom was right.

I've been doing a lot of that lately too. I can't do a lot of the things I used to be able to do and need help with now.

You are absolutely right. I have that problem and even have problems opening my medication now with the child proof lock. I'm going to have to start asking my pharmacist to use regular medicine bottles if they even have any.

@Marilynda1225 I hope they do too. The small bottles aren't quite as bad but I have several bigger bottles and it takes me a while to open them.

I know just how you feel. When it comes to opening lids, I will take the handle of a butter knife and gently tap the sides of the lid and then to break the seal I will (lightly) hit it against the countertop. Then it seems to let go and it opens for me. Try that the next time, I used to watch my Gramma use that little trick and its come in handy for me these days!

@Marilynda1225 another trick is to put a fork or knife on piece between the lid and the seal and apply a little pressure and again you can hear the vacuum seal being broken... and should then be able to open the jar... similar to what julia suggested just a different way of doing it... because I'm slightly worried about smashing the jar... lol's

These vacuum sealed lids are ridiculous to open but I'll try your tip and hopefully can continue to open my own jars

I always thought I'd be able to do for myself and hate that my age is starting to hinder me. It is scary to see myself turning into my mother

I wish I had a nickel for every time that has happened to me. My mother used to say that all the time. You are right we come full circle and then realize we are eventually at the same place as our parents were.

I have a gadget that hangs underneath my kitchen cabinets and makes it much easier to remove lids. I don't know what I would do without it.

I bought a gadget to open jars, sometimes it was so hard that I ended up with a strained wrist.

I'm lucky to have strong sons in law and grandsons but none that live with me so basically I'm covered for those strong manly things that need to be done but no help for a silly cap I can't open

Not a fun realization is it? Right now I'm at the peak of stuff opening ability, since my hands are finally strong enough after a decade of doing typing work, but I'm already thinking of strategies for when I am not as capable.
