It Was Expired Already !

Last week , I bought an imported butter from a supermarket where I always buy them .
In the morning , I had my sliced bread spread with the butter and took a bite of the sandwich .
Much to my surprise , the taste wasn’t nice already . It was rancid ! And I immediately see what was its expiry date and it said September 16, 2015 .
I know I should have taken a look at the expiry date before I bought it . However , I always buy my spread at that supermarket so I was confident that all their products are good .
Thus , I returned it and they had me choose a replacement . The other s displayed has December 2015 as expiry date .
But I didn’t get that , but instead I get another kind with an expiry date of April 2016 .
It was cheaper , so they let me choose an item to make up for the prize .
I know , i know i should taken a look at its expiry date though .
Did you experience something like this already ?

No , it's for December 2015 , two months from now . But i don't like that anymore .
This butter is not a discounted item . It's a regularly priced one . The customer service said that the merchandiser of that brand forgot to check the expiry dates . She called her on the phone to inform her about it .

Medicines. They are the worst. Somehow, when buying them out I always ensure to look at the expiry dates. But then, I dont understand why I always start using those tabs or capsules from the end where they are printed. Normally, my medicines are consumed within a month (as I need regular supply of them, and often buy for a month at a time). But the others, like the one crocin that we have for fever, it has been there since ages and no one now can read the dates on them. If I try discarding these in the presence of my loving wife, she has always so many arguments and I drop them back in the medicine box instead of the dustbin.

I really laughed out loud upon reading that last part .
I think , we too have expired medicines like those for fever , because we seldom have fever . Thus , they get expired too . But i throw them all away once i saw that they're already expired .

@SIMPLYD The good news is that I am not allowed any other medication along with the regular medicines I have. Out of experience, I realized that these combinations just dont do any good to me. So I found an Ayurvedic medicine (I dont know its name as it is locally produced by one in my brother's inlaws village). These tablets taste peculiar and do not have any expiry dates. And a tablet of this has often helped me cure my fever in a day. Dont know what the long time effects of this home prepared tablet can be.

That is negligence on their part. They owe you a lot of apology. The other day I bought Anchor butter from Shopwise at cheaper rate. It is normally sold at PHP105 but it was marked down to PHP99 so I immediately checked the expiration date. It is still till 2016 so I bought two. I learned that the shop is celebrating its anniversary so some items are sold at cheaper price.
It is always important to check the expiration day.

@thesids Why , how do they react if you tell them that , there in India ? Here , you can always even threaten them that they will be reported to the Department of Trade and Industry , which will reprimand the store for selling expired goods .

Wow , that was really a bargain ! The other times , this store also has a buy one take one of their butter - President . It's a very delicious imported one but expensive .
I took the last one (only one piece ) but the price was 188 ! I thought it's buy one take one so the price should have been half. But it was not . I didn't buy it . Its expiration date is 3 months from that date .

We were at Melbourne in a Mall. I saw the chocolate section where they were being offered at heavy discounts. I picked up a few of the giant sized Toblerone and just as I was arranging to pay, I looked at the expiry date. No wonder there were such heavy discounts. I did not buy. But I was later told by my folks that there was no harm in buying them. I lost a good bargain.

Here in the mall where our office is there is a supermarket . They would always have the "buy one take one " when their products being sold is about two to 3 months to expire .
That should also be done by that supermarket i bought the butter from .

Do you think so ? Won't there be a difference in the taste already ?

I had enough experiences like you had, so now i always look at always grab the item from the back instead of the front one..the front ones are usually the ones ready to expire..

Butter that expires on April 2016??? Are you sure that this is good butter without addictive to keep it fresh longer. Switzerland is a butter production country, we buy local butter and the expiry date is never more than two months. You can freeze the butter if you want. Cut it is serving pieces and put in a plastic bag.

@SIMPLYD There is another little trick to keep the butter fresh longer in the refrigerator. Take it out from its paper, put in a cu, cover up fresh water and put it back in the refrigerator. The water avoids the oxidation of the surface and the butter does not turn rancid. This is what my grandparents did in the past. They produced butter.

Maybe you should not buy anymore to that store for being so irresponsible in selling expired products. That's negligence on the part of the store.

I was thinking that i should have talked to their manager instead of the customer representative only . At least , she will know what are the lapses in their store , because for sure she wasn't informed about it . But i was in a hurry because i did the return during our lunchreak .

Really you don't mind eating something after the expiry date ? What if the taste is already different and it has a bit of mold already , would that still be okay with you

Yes, I have and that is why I will pull from the back instead of from the front as the freshest are in the back because that is where they stock is in the back of the counter. Once in a while I forget to check the date and have had to return something to the store, when I have had to do that I am not a happy camper.

It has happened to me. Sometimes I don´t go back to return it if the product is not expensive as it costs me more to go back to the super. Ithink that the market should check what they are selling.

Yes, i won't go back also if it would cost me more in fare just to return it . But this one is expensive and i am just a short ride away so i returned it .
Indeed it's the store's responsibility to see to it that all their products expiry dates are still good .
Here you can actually complain this incident to the Dept . of Trade and Industry . Fr sure they will slap the store , a penalty .

I am surprised that the butter tasted rancid as it wasn't that much out of date. But imported butter is wonderful. I try to pick milk and things as far out from the expiration date as possible, but sometimes I don't even check.

Yes, it was rancid already and a bit greenish on the side of the butter . Well, it was expired Sept 16, 2015 , so that explains for the rancid taste .

@birjudanak That's sad . When that happens we can always say that it's because we are confident that they are not selling expired ones .
