I am not a diabetic and that made me think how little the one who gave me that gift knows about me. I love chocolates but why should I eat dark chocolates when I can pick and choose whatever I want to, as I am not a diabetic. Should I comment on this gift and convey my thoughts to the giver?

Dark chocolate isn't just for diabetics. It contains nearly as much sugar as any other chocolate but no milk products. Personally, I prefer dark chocolate because I like the bitterness. I quite like the ones with extra flavouring such as ginger, chilli, sea salt, &c. because the flavours complement the chocolate. One of the ones I like (not all the time but just occasionally) is Marmite chocolate (Marmite is a very salty yeast product, which is usually spread thinly on toast)

@Barbourne says those who like dark chocolates smack of sophistication. I may as well start liking it just so that I qualify!

I like the taste of milk chocolate a lot better, I would not be happy with this gift at all.

I am not a diabetic and neither is my brother. Yet the chocolate we prefer is the dark one. What I don´t like at all is the white chocolate as it´s too sweet and greasy for my taste.

There are countless varieties in the market to choose from. I used to like the Ferro Roche but I got fed up of them after an over dose

Oh my, that is one of my favorites flavors, but why would you comment on being a diabetic? Is this something a diabetic can eat? Sure it has less sugar, but still, it isn't just diabetics who eat it. Dark chocolate is not only good (if you eat the good kind) but much better for you than milk chocolate. So if you don't want it, I'll take it..

There is salt in this chocolate. Most here got introduced to dark chocolates as being good for diabetics.

@Carmelanirel2 This chocolate has sea salt. Whatever it is I did not like the taste. I somehow cannot associate sugar and salt together but sweet and sour yes.

@allknowing Really? I didn't know that and it is an acquired taste. I taught myself to like it knowing that not only am I getting less sugar (I really love sweets) but there are more nutrients in it. Plus the salt is not just regular salt, it is sea salt, it isn't as bad as regular salt and it reminds me of when I mix sweet and salty food, like pretzels and chocolate. Have you tried it? If you don't like it, maybe find one (this is a good brand name) with a creamy filling, those are really good too, my favorite is caramel filled ones.

I eat only dark chocolate and I'm not a diabetic. I love the richness of it and I would think the giver was giving me a real treat. It all comes down to personal taste. The person giving you the chocolate was thinking only to give you a gift, I'm sure, with no other implications behind it.

No implications as we know each other very well and so was wondering. Anyway not that I have not eaten dark chocolate. But have not chosen them. This one in particular has sea salt in it which my palate is not used to. Have you never eaten the other varieties? There are so many terrific ones. I like most of them. Liqueurs are my favourite too.

I don't really like dark chocolate it is very strong taste for me. I may eat it really early in the morning only because 100 grams for me is like 2 coffees :(

My personal preference is milk chocolate and do not like dark chocolate at all, but I would not complain about being given such a gift. Maybe the giver considers dark chocolate to be better, I know that my mother was always a lover of it.

@allknowing Yes, I find dark chocolate quite bitter as well, yet as I previously stated some people do enjoy it.

This thing about gifting dark chocolates to diabetics runs in the family. This is a family member close enough to know a bit about me. Actually I tasted them and they are horrible. There is some sea salt added to it. Wonder whose creation that is. Ugh!!!

In fact I think chocolates are just not for diabetic, including dark chocolates. I think the one who gave you dark chocolate is very considerate. In the past I didn't like dark chocolate because it tasted bitter. Today I changed my mind. Dark chocolate is very good for the health, especially the blood vein and so on. So if I will eat the chocolate, I will choose dark chocolates at first. Although other flavors taste better. But health is still the most important.

i do not suppose eating a slab is going to affect me one way or the other. I am a chocolate foodie and have tasted practically all kinds from the mundane to the extra ordinary. When I eat chocolates I see that it balances with all other stuff I eat. Of the chocolates dark chocolate is preferred to others when it comes to diabetics.

I only love dark chocolate, it is the only chocolate I like and it is also the only one that is good for our health. This sea salt chocolate is made by Lindt here in Switzerland, I suppose they customize the package for Ghirardelli.

I do not mind dark chocolate. I have had them but this one has sea salt. I have yet to acquire a taste for a chocolate and salt combination. It is also more bitter than the normal dark chocolate. Of the Lindt brands I like their white chocolate. Chocolates may not be good for health but I am a chocolate foodie. I balance my diet when I eat them. The cocoa in there is good for health but milk and sugar may be the culprits. My sugar level is excellent.

Dark chocolate is my favorite kind of chocolate and I'm always happy to receive it, unless it has salt or other "enhancements" in it. I buy Lindt 98% cocoa and keep a bar or two of it in my fridge. I'm not diabetic, either. When someone gives me something I don't like or don't want/need, I keep the thought and pass the gift along, but developed this approach only after many years of agonizing over what to do.

Dark chocolate isn't just for diabetics. I don't have diabetes but I still relish it. It's just a simple gift, I'm sure. Milk chocolates are preferred by majority though.

Chocolates are what I live for. I have tasted almost every kind of chocolate including the dark ones but not by choice. And this particular one has sea salt in it.
