What have we done to the wild animals?

Not only have we become addicted to sodas and instant foods we have made the creatures in the wild addicted to these as well.
I was in a national park ( a wild animal reserve) and suddenly a monkey jumped from a tree grabbed a bottle of soda from a kid and opened the bottle to drink the contents.
I also noticed them rummaging trash cans and selecting packets of chips to eat the left overs.
There are regular complaints of monkeys attacking people for edibles. Who is to blame for this?

proximity to humans ruins hunting instincts - it is too easy to scavenge from our disposables

@sofssu we are attracting lots of urban foxes as people in towns are keeping chickens in gardens and allotments which foxes like to take

@arthurchappell The closer we move into the forest the more vulnerable we are to attack. We have taken so much of their habitat that they decide to move into ours. We have elephants and other wild animals coming into the farms here. These poor things get shot at because they eat the crops or the farm animals.

@arthurchappell So true.. they become dependent on us and start attacking when they don't get what they want.

Not me. But I think in a way, they are trying to 'humanize' chimps. So who knows, they might take it a step farther. I mean their is so many studies of teaching chimps sign language. *shrugs*

@TexanTornado Humanize them and make them like people who are helpless in their own territory.

We are to blame. Maybe we should have not better to give them back their natural habitat and we won't be having the human animal conflicts

@sofssu,Thanks a lot for a discussion on a virgin topic. You are absolutely right. We human beings have done a grave injustice to wild animals who in pre historic days were our next door neighbours. Here in the villages at the outskirts of our town wild elephants stray in and destroy their huts and paddy fields. This is because we have destroyed their natural habitat.

I've often thought that zoos, should have more water foundations and containers for water, but not serve any junk food, animals can get addicted just as much as people can

@Jessicalynnt They have a lot of water for the birds and squirrels and stuff.. but these monkeys seem to like junk food better. They don't serve junk food, its the visitors who share stuff with the animals.

@sofssu - I read in the news today that some crazy lady sneaked into a zoo, tried to pet a tiger, and got bitten by that cat. So, I guess, in answer to your question, "What have we done to wild animals?" we have put them into zoo cages so that drunk people can sneak in and try to pet them such that they get their hands bitten. It is a convenient way in which to give emergency room doctors patients on whom to practice hand-stitching. Good animals. they surely can be helpful, those wild critters.

People around here that cater to the bird population via buying bird seeds and such is great, but I'm surprised by those that offer jelly to specific breeds. I'd think the sugar content wouldn't be good for any animal whether wild ones or domesticated.
I've not been to zoos in many years, so I don't see what you've described, but I can imagine it taking place.

@MarshaMusselman The parks here allows us to feed cucumbers and carrots to deer and bird seeds they have placed there to the birds.. But giving them all the junk isn't the done thing.

It sounds like an interesting place. Perhaps the humans visiting should not bring food into the compound.

@PainsOnSlate Its a beautiful place but made dangerous by us humans.. I did write a suggestion to them to stop allowing food into the premises.

@sofssu I have been to similar places in the state and in Canada and food might be there but only in select areas so the animals only eat what they are supposed to eat. It works, it should work there.

@idrissi1977 Monkeys only take a cue from us.. They just follow their instinct and try to get their food.

It isn't just wild animals, we give cookies to our dogs, etc. They should keep snacks and drinks out of any park or zoo so that the animals don't get the junk food. Think about how many visitors "share" with the animals. They must get a huge amount of junk food on any given day.

@Rollo1 You make a strong argument there.. I was at the deer enclosure and a lady gave then chips.. The park has cucumbers which we can feed the deer with but when the deer see the chips they run for them. They seem more addicted to junk food that we are I guess.
We 'Share' with them not out of genuine love but for our selfies and perfect pictures.

That's amazing. I have heard that there's an orangatang who likes to smoke at a zoo. I don't know if that really is true. I hope not.
