Do child prodigies and soul mates have anything in common?

How do you explain 4-10 year olds exhibiting finesse in art, math, chess or music? Yes, all the explanations tell you how they are able to do it. Possessing an extraordinary working memory, a rage to master, a tendency towards their chosen field and careful nurture. That's all good. But WHY? Why do they have the tendency? What attracted them in the first place? Why music for some and math, art for others? Yes, science has explained prodigies rationally, but not satisfactorily. They still use the words 'lucky coincidence of all these factors'. With all the scientific theory available, can we replicate them? Can they be predicted? What is the X factor? Soulmates - you know them when you meet them. They are not a myth. The believers already have met theirs, the non believers haven't yet. How is it that you connect on all levels the minute you meet them? Why does it feel that this is not the first time? To borrow Nolan's words, meeting them is like 'a half remembered dream'. It baffles you, throws all your rational thinking out of the window. The sheer quality of rapport and chemistry you share overloads your brain and short circuits it. It is all corny and cheesy until you experience it first hand. So, two seemingly unconnected paragraphs. What is the bridge? Can I dare say reincarnation? :) Continued... My hypothesis - Both child prodigies and soulmates might be an indirect (for the lack of a better word) "proof" that we all have past lives, and by implication - future births. What we truly work for, put effort into, our "saadhana" stays with us somehow. Prodigies hone their craft for some hundreds of years maybe, and in this (or some) life, their practice and effort reach the tipping point and they achieve excellence in a very short period of time. And continue to exhibit mastery. There are no lucky factors. It is all pure, hardcore hard work and consistent practice. The instant connection with someone we barely knew might be an indicator that we have met in another lifetime. The kind of emotion that goes beyond physical, mental and emotional, that which feels like finally arriving home, and finding a familiar soul which makes us feel an innate trust and the sheer quality of vibes - these kind of relationships cannot be built in a lifetime. They transcend lifetimes. PS - So, my take away is that whatever skill you are attracted to, practise it. You might not achieve any tangible results now, but hopefully, if you persist, you can master it in another lifetime. So, don't give up. Go after your dream and give it all you've got. :) And our loved ones are with us. No matter what. They will always be.

Interesting article. I was a child prodigy. I sat at the piano at age 7 and started playing. Taught myself in one afternoon. There were 2 of my dads aunts who were concert pianists. So I say heredity plays into it. My sister and my children are very good artists, and that's genetics too. I don't really believe in soulmates anymore, although I may say that to people jokingly. Everyone I thought was my soulmate turned out to be 100% jerks.

Wow. First of all, I salute you. I admire your talent and am so honored to make aquaintance with a prodigy. :) Yes, heredity, genetics definitely play a role. But, my point was that this concept of prodigy goes beyond them. You cannot be sure that a child of a prodigy will be a prodigy herself, right? Or that prodigies are only born to prodigies themselves. There are many other factors of which past lives is one - that was my whole point of the article. And as for your experience of soulmates, I am sorry to hear that. I hope you find yours soon. I believe in them, ONLY BECAUSE I have met mine. So, I sincerely wish yours is around the corner. :) Good luck.

@SBhargav I would not count on finding a soulmate. I have given up. The last one was a German fellow, and I still care for him, and he's mentioned the same to me. It just would not work. I tried living there for a while, I just missed America too much and he would have missed Germany if he lived here. So we are just best friends. I know I will never have what I had with him, so why bother.

@Pattitude I'm really sorry to hear that. Yes, sometimes for reasons unknown, we have to be apart from them and that's truly painful. Heights of ecstasy to depths of despair.

Yes, I do believe in reincarnation, though most "scientific" minds tend to explain it away by saying about genes. Sometimes it is a surprise that a couple with no sense of numbers and mathematics, yet produce a child prodigy

@scheng1 - My point exactly. There is so much more to it than what the traditional, "rational", science offers us.

I hardly see a relevance to child prodigy and a soul mate.

Yes, there is no relevance, but they are connected by the thread of "past lives". I have edited my post, since my explanation felt too long to fit into this comment. Hope I have put across it clearly enough. :)

I have met a few wise souls, perhaps not child prodigy's, but still, and have long since thought that there are finite souls and we climb the tree of life throughout our many lives, learning as we go.

@SBhargav I think if we don't learn it, we get to repeat it until we do, and I dont know about you, but some lessons hurt!

@Jessicalynnt - "Learning as we go". Well put! That's the hope and never stop learning just because we can't see the results of our work. We cannot give up saying "There is no point". There always is. And that's the best part.

@Jessicalynnt I agree with you. We are doomed to repeat the same patterns till we learn to handle them in a better way. The "learning" I was referring to in my post was related more to a particular skill we like. For instance, I like to paint. But I know I can't make a living on it. So, instead of just chucking it away saying it is of no use, I can paint, learn and hone my craft and keep at it. Practise, just for its sake.

You don't have to explain it to me. I am a believer of reincarnation. I have met at least three soul mates in this lifetime. There might be more but three popped into my head when I read this. Very interesting. I've never connected soul mates with child prodigies but it makes a lot of sense.

@PainsOnSlate - I am glad you met yours. :) Yes, I am a firm believer of past lives as well. And there are hints all around us, and if we are aware, the universe will let us in on all its secrets!
