Mexican Woman Insulted By Frito Pie

Recently I was looking at a recipe for a mexican frito pie on a social media site. The recipe was fairly interesting to me as my husband mentioned to me once that he liked frito pie and explained the recipe to me. I have never made one, myself, but I understand it is a great snack food=kind of a taco casserole. The video showed a person putting a pie crust in the bottom of a pie tin, adding 1 lb of hamburger browned in taco seasoning,1 cup of sour cream, chopped onion, chopped tomato, minced mild green chile, olives and shredded mexican fiesta cheese spread over the top. Bake for 25-30 minutes on 350 degrees, then garnish with shredded lettuce, salsa and avocado. Looked pretty tasty to me. I read down through some of the comments and a gal commented that she was from mexico and she would never make or eat that cr-- she put up several pictures of true Mexican dishes that she would recommend, that looked pretty tasty if you were up for a meal and not a snack. I am guessing that she was insulted by the word Mexican in front of the frito pie and she did not feel that it was a traditional food from her country, so she dissed it. What do you think?

I am Mexican and I am not insulted by Frito Pie. Of course it is not a Mexican dish, but it sounds tasty and I am going to try it.

There are some who feel defensive because of the current attitudes about immigrants (primarily assumed to be from Mexico) even though they are very proud of their heritage. The fact that something might be called Mexican when it's only influenced by Mexican flavors can really bother native Mexicans. The French in particular can be the same way about things called French that are far from. Yet, if she thought about it, she'd see that we love those flavors so much that we've begun doing other things with them.

I like that perspective on things. A little more open mindedness.

When I lived in the US I once commented to a colleague that it was a shame there was no Mexican restaurant in our town. He replied that there was a Taco Bell. I responded that as far as I was concerned Taco Bell was not a restaurant, did not produce Mexican food and it was questionable whether what it produced could be called food at all! I guess I side with the Mexican woman, but in hindsight perhaps I was rather rude to people who like Taco Bell!
