I love those side discussion

Its fun starting and responding to discussions. but its even more fun to get two people chatting away on a subject that can be related or even totally off topic.
The whole purpose of being here is to chatter on with your friends , so if my discussion has brought people to chat away, I am thrilled.
I also like to get into long conversation chatting back and forth with people.. But the time zones don't really match.
I am just happy to be here chatting away. How do you feel about these side shoots from a discussion?
I know that I had brought this up in an earlier discussion but that again was just a side shoot not the main discussion itself.

I love the side discussions, but I understand that some people do not. In fact, I was having a discussion regarding one topic. Through comments on the original response that were perfectly valid to the original discussion topic, the conversation progressed as it has a way of doing. These comments were neither offensive nor randomly off-topic. In fact, they had a valid and logical progression to them. However, the original poster of the discussion asked us to leave her discussion, and she has since made references to our "hi-jacking her discussion" on several discussions now.

@TexanTornado I am just getting tired of reading about this "one incident" that really was not at all what she makes it seem like. Don't get me wrong, there are others that could say that and have a perfectly valid point, but she is not one of them.

You naughty naughty girl you. You know if you gonna 'hijack' something, make it worth your wild. Make it a Ferrari or something equally or more impressive than that.

I totally agree with you. The comments is where the fun lies. In fact, just to prove it, I'll tell you that I had a dream last night about members on this site. We were all on a bus here in Canada and a lady who lives in Michigan was on the bus with her hubby, both are members on the site. I convinced the bus driver to take us to the Dollar store to go shopping, her and I like to shop there. It was such a fun dream. The member was &Susan, but everyone, yourself included, was on the bus. And we were all laughing and talking with our various accents. Fun fun.

@Juliaacv Do you always have such vivid dreams? I guess you are really addicted to the site.
Yes, I guess we are in a way making a journey together even though we are geographically divided.. our interaction and the fun we have as pat of the side discussions bring us together in the spirit of camaraderie. I do enjoy all this very much.

I think it was my first post that went over the moon. I was wondering what was happening but i figured it out quickly and I was lucky enough to get to know a lot of the members that know how this site works and how to carry on a conversation. So much fun!!!

I like them much more than the discusions and normal answers. The other are like chatting in your home with a cup of coffee and some biscuits

@purplealabaster I havenĀ“t seen any of that. But they should learn that they will earn also from that. And they should know that this is a social site too

@marguicha Read some of the comments on here. There have been a couple similar discussions as well. Most people are all for the interaction and progression, but there are a few that are adamantly against it. You also would not notice the comments being deleted, but it happened to a few of my friends, which is how I know that it is happening.

It seems that some of the newer users are totally and completely against this sort of thing. They feel it is rude and refer to it as "hijacking their discussion". They will ask you to leave or just delete your comment without any word or reason for doing so.

Side discussions come often naturally in another discussion. However some members don't appreciate them. I was surprised to see off-topics comments deleted in a thread recently by the starter of the discussion, and a discussion telling us that we had "to stick" to the discussion. Fortunately it is not the case, and myLot encourages us to have side discussions, or I would have been banned since a long time.

@sofssu They were not. I was just asking to another member who commented in my response box why he changed his username. It was a little side discussion, and all the side comments have been deleted by the starter. Some members like only straight lines.

I absolutely love being able to chat away with someone I have found a connection with. It leads to more topics and eventually could lead to a whole new discussion. We all take things in different ways, so it could even lead to quite a few more discussions if one wishes.

I have had one discussion go off in so many different directions and still manage to relate in some way to the original discussion material. It is all in perception.

@purplealabaster True that. I mean any comment giving can lead back to the original post in some kind of way.

@TexanTornado As we had discussed earlier on your discussions and mine its a relief after the B site to be able to chat and not feel like a gold fish in a jar. Its our chatting freely that helped us to connect with one another.. Its this freedom that brings me back to the site very day.

It depends on the side shoot. I had one happen when I first came here that started making me feel uncomfortable so I did ask them nicely to go chat elsewhere. I prefer the discussions are about the topic. Sometimes it's best for those chatty people to simply start a new dscussion.

I have no problem with it at all. It hasn't happened much yet on any of my discussions, but if folks want to start a new thread, it's A-okay with me.

It's not really a new thread per se. It's as I responded to you here, and added something else to you, that isn't what the topic above which @sofssu wrote, but you reply, and then we continue chatting. That is what she is meaning and someone has an issue with.
Example: Say we talking discussions, and you mention a book. We start talking about a book/book club and a discussion ya'll had there. You still on topic but added a new aspect of it.

@MarshaMusselman I am glad that you have no objection to people going off into a natural form of conversation that leads from one thing to another.. related in some ways. It adds richness and value to the discussion itself. I think that is what @TexanTornado is referring to.
I agree with you both of you.. I guess as much as we like digressing we it may be required to respect the likes of the OP himself/herself.

The progression of a discussion has always been allowed on here. I do know that there were some even in the old days that did not like it nor agree with it, but it has always been allowed. It seems that there are more these days that dislike it, although there are also more that not only enjoy it but also encourage it. The ones that do not like it, however, will go so far as to delete your comment without any word or reason given.

@Hatley I am on the same page as you.. I do not understand why people would take offense to it.. this is a social interaction site after all. I don't have a clue about what happened earlier.. but some of the veterans here write comments which have absolutely no relation to the discussion itself.
@purplealabaster I can understand your feeling very well as i read more about what has happened here from you.

This kind of chatting used to be vigorous in the old myLot which I did not participate in. I prefer not to digress from the topic as far as possible. But sometimes it goes off which is fine but not a meaningless chatter.

@sofssu I know what digression means in the real world. I have a friend who is famous for that. She would start telling us about her holiday where she meets a friend and the whole conversation then on is about that friend and nothing else. Such digression is not something I can digest.

@allknowing Yeah there are people who talk not knowing they are not really heard.. But I guess the digressions are what spice up the conversations. However, I guess you may have to stomach here very now and then even if you can't digest it, like perhaps you do with your friend. It takes all kinds and we are all different.

i have always liked participating in the side discussions, even just reading them can be enlightening or entertaining. i've always felt that was the appeal of the original mylot, but now i get to know (here) how other members feel about them, though i'm surprised that others actually delete them.
one solution would be to uncheck some of the notifications; the extreme would be blocking members.

The problem with blocking, if I understand it correctly, is that YOU can still see and respond to everything that the blocked member posts, but THEY can't see or respond to anything that you post. Then again, if you wanted to go off-topic on their discussion without being deleted, then I guess that would work.

@hereandthere I guess people need to see it for what it is.. It is but a natural progression of conversation.. I wonder if anyone just starts off a side discussion just for the heck of it. Deleting comments or blocking is not fair in any way. But I guess others think differently.

Actually, we are not required or requested to strictly stick to a topic. In fact, progression in conversation is encouraged as long as it stays respectful. If you notice, even on our Admin Alex's discussions, there are comments within responses that veer off his original discussion topic. If they were not allowed, then he not only would advise the people that do this that it is not acceptable but also remove those comments. Since he does not, it is clearly acceptable. In addition, from time to time you will also see Alex drop by and add one of these sorts of comments, although admittedly it is rare when he does it.

@LadyDuck @purplealabaster I think purple has made a great point.. we really don't have to stick to the discussion. we are talking about natural progressions of normal conversation which I guess is acceptable here.
