A Scary Moonlight Walk In The Cemetery

Canada
October 30, 2015 7:41am CST
When I was a kid living in the country, family, school and church were the only entertainments around other than Mother Nature and I did enjoy her too and still do. My little Baptist Church on the top of the hill was a couple of hundred years old and the center of our lives. Our minister had a bunch of kids and we often gathered at the parsonage to play. One night around Halloween my friend Sherry (one of the pastors kids) had a sleep over. There were probably 15 of us around the age of 11-13. There were only three other houses on that hill and my doctor and his family lived next to the cemetery. Marilyn their daughter was at the sleepover with us. We kids decided to go for a walk in the cemetery in the moonlight. No flashlights , just the moon. It was very quiet and spooky. We walked down the laneway in the cemetery and when we turned around to go back to the pastor's house we saw a ghost. We were old enough to know there were no real ghosts in the cemetery. Or were we wrong??? I can still hear the screaming... I decided to be brave and I started to chase the ghost. When I got close enough to notice he was wearing a sheet I ran as fast as I could and grabbed the sheet and there was a PERSON I DIDN'T RECOGNIZE. I was stunned, scared and about to faint when the man grabbed my arm and said Marilyn, it s me, Doctor Peck!!! I realized it was Dr Peck but usually he had on his doctor suit not jeans and t-shirt. I almost fainted, he scared me to death - almost. Then we laughed, all 15 of us including his daughter who shares my name Marilyn. He was trying to scare us and entertain us at the same time and he did that. He's a good man and great father. He really did scare me. If I had fainted I would have been in good hands. That was the last time we as children visited the cemetery at night in the moon light. Have you ever been in a cemetery in the moon light? Happy Halloween The photo is something I do on Halloween, Carve a Watermelon. Similar to a pumpkin but you leave the red fruit so the light can come through it. Expensive because watermelons are not in season but the reaction to the red and green face is amazing. Kids are awed and so are the parents.

My mom rented an apartment across from the city cemetery. No spooks that I know of.

I've always loved cemeteries just for the history in them, the older the better. I've actually never seen a ghost in one since that night.

My family love the occult, paranoraml, all of it. There is an old military cemetery here that we visit. My daughter and her BF have gotten some voices from there recorded. I have a tale I tell about the cemetery and will share it in a discussion. Hope you stop by.

@Marilynda1225 I wrote about my friend in Kansas who had a ghost that I met one night on that other site, I might have to write about that here too.

That was one big scare indeed . I would also have fainted , seeing there;s a real person inside , since a person can harm another .

@PainsOnSlate Wow, how brave of you to chase him or you know all along that the ghost was actually your dad inside the sheet .

@SIMPLYD It wasn't my dad but a good friends dad. I believed it had to be someone we knew, it was a country setting, no town, you knew everyone who lived there.

I figured if someone was running around with a sheet on, it was for our benefit, just playing with us so I chased him and it was just a Dad teasing us. I lived in the country, there were no dangers back then. Yes it was frightening for a minute...

This is a good story and you are right, if you fainted you were in good hands. Very nice idea a carved watermelon, I can still find big green melon here.

That watermelon is very impressive, I love it. Funnily enough I put a poem on here yesterday about a guy dressing up in a sheet trying to scare people. He got his comeuppance, unlike your Doctor.

@PainsOnSlate I wish that they would have something to indicate that we've read a post, like they did on Bubblews. I keep opening ones I've read as I sometimes forget the titles. I love it here too, but actually prefer the layout on the other site - I find it's easy to miss comments on my posts here.

@jaboUK I use the notifications to tell me who commented and this morning I noticed at least10 more comments on this post that no notifications told me about. And I agree, I have to look down the page often to tell me if I already responded to a post, especially the boring ones

I think I would have run away like the other kids, I would have been terrified. The watermelon looks cool, I've never seen that before.

That was back in the late 50's, there was no fear back then. Would I do that in 2015? Probably not.

That's the truth, it was scary only because I didn't recognize him in jeans. He was always so dressed up when I'd see him.

OH wow, that's so kool. There're no kids round here or if there are they don't do the trick er treat thingy. Many people in these parts go to Juarez to share the picnic with their ancestors, I really don't get all that but then I'm not Mexican so I wouldn't.

You'll have to take a lot of photos to share with us @PainsOnSlate especially since you'll have a brand new porch to show off along with the decor.

It was a sleep over and we were kids, it was back the in 1950 when crazies weren't around. We were safe. The watermelon is a bit harder to make than a pumpkin but the end result is worth the trouble. Glad you liked it.

Back then when I was a kid there was no TV with horror, back in those days it was news and funny sitcoms.

I never did go to a cemetery in the dark. When I was young I liked to go to the old cemeteries during the day and read the headstones. But I haven't been to a cemetery in years.

What a great story, you must have had a lot of fun that night! I remember my favorite Halloween was when I stayed at my cousin's place, we went to the church basement where they put on a nice, fun party for us all. We bobbed for apples and did all kinds of fun games. I don't remember ever having that much fun at a party, and its a shame that kids wouldn't be content with such a gathering today, but it was so much fun!

Our church had a wonderful party for Halloween, the older kids made a haunted house in the basement of the Church hall. My mother dressed as a witch and walked around with her pet Bantam Rooster on her shoulder. He never moved and surprised people who thought he was fake - he wasn't...

Yup that's what we do when we're kids. It was a good kind of scare and we laughed a lot after it was over.
