Before I joined Mylot I read the guidelines and was pleased to know that writers from all over the world and regardless of their proficiency in English, had a safe place to write and learn, unlike some other sites. And since English is my first language, I feel fortunate to be able to share my skills with others. According to one of the MyLot Guidlines:
"Criticizing users for bad or broken English - We have users from all around the world, and they are welcome regardless of their proficiency with the English language. In fact, a lot of users come here to get better with their English skills. Let's help them out!"
I have since read posts and comments by many members who say that Mylot has improved their English tremendously. I commend Mylot for their progressive stance and for opening the doors to English class. And so it should be. In this global classroom we are all teachers and students in some way or other. What are your thoughts?

If someone asks a question about English grammar or usage, I am always only too happy to try and help them. Unsolicited criticism of - and especially unkind comments about - a person's English is a definite no-no, however. It makes the person doing it look a know-it-all and a p[r]ig and it makes the recipient of it feel foolish and unwanted.

No one should be criticizing anyone's English and doing so would be breaking Mylot rules. People learn by simply participating and reading well written posts in the English language.

That is one amazing way to look at this. I think that any online community that encourages everyone to participate to improve their skills is one great place. I do agree that MyLot is an excellent place to help people learn to write English better.

@poehere But do you also speak French? I would love to be able to speak French. We liv in what is called a Bilingual country where English and French are the two official languages. I did take some classes but I am not very good at learning French.

Yes if English isn't your first language, you can learn a lot just by reading posts written by English speaking persons

@Freelanzer You are right on this one. My Mom is American and my dad French and we did grow up in France. But my mom did speak English to us at home when we were growing up. She wanted us to speak both languages. Yes speaking is different than reading and writing it.

And it is good to know that MYlot saw it fit to include it as a golden rule here

I have seen so many posts where people say their English has improved by just reading writing and interacting.

It does go both ways. We can all learn from each other, new and different things

@ThankyouLord Oh no! I would never suggest you correct anyone, that is the same as criticizing them and that is not allowed. They learn by reading and interacting and eventually their English improves

@Freelanzer @ThankyouLord yes the correction doesn't have to be extreme. If it's a simple grammatical error then he would get over it in a few days picking up our sentences. I just try to correct him if his intentions were something else and he dictated something contrary. And that too on a personal message. :)

I think if someone asks for help, then I will offer my help. But if they put up a post and feel really good about it, only to have me come by and offer my corrections, it could hurt someone's feelings. I think asking if they want correcting first might be a nice thing to do.

We do not see much of bad English in this rebooted myLot. Earlier we had many who could hardly frame a sentence.

@Freelanzer It could also be they are not here any more. Since correcting English is not allowed here there is not much scope for anyone to improve their English and this includes even native speakers

@allknowing I believe you can learn from just reading good English and many here have said that their English has improved just by interacting.

Yes, mylot is one of the factors that we, non-english speaking people, has improved our proficiency in the language. But there are times that I could not understand some specially if those english speaking members use idiomatic expressions. But it seldom happened.

There is trying to improve your English and there's making absolutely no effort. They are very different things. And every member can decide whether or not to take on the role of unpaid teacher or to just ignore the incomprehensible posters.

No one has to correct anyone's writing. We teach simply by what we write, others read what we write and eventually that helps them to improve on their own writing in English. All we have to do is keep on doing what we are doing, no extra effort is required , you are free to ignore, it makes no difference to what someone learns and I am so happy that Mylot has made this a criticism free zone as far as those whose who are still learning English

@Freelanzer true but it also has a rule against posts of no value and sometimes the two rules are conflicting.
