Is anything safe anymore?

My wife is one that is constantly buying into every article or news report that says something is bad for you. I'm beginning to wonder if anything is safe. If I am to believe all of the reports I see, and all of the things my wife says she hears, then fluoride is bad, eating fish can be bad, gluten is bad, msg's are bad, beef is bad, non free range chickens are bad, shampoo is bad, dawn soap is bad, johnson and johnson baby powder is bad and a whole bunch more that I cant think of right now. It seems there is a report almost every day about some new study that says some food or product is bad for you.

Yeah, it appears every time you turn around, something is bad for you. Which leads you down the cynical road of "why don't I just lie down in a ditch and you can kick dirt over me."
To be perfectly honest, I take the reports from the experts with a grain of salt any more. Everything could kill us. Period. Including the air we breath, because we can only begin to guess what nastiness is in the oxygen. Still the more I hear about this food product and this thing being bad at you, my mind just kind of glosses over it. Let me worry about myself. If I make a bad choice with some product, so be it. The consequences will be mine to bare in the future. Some so called expert telling me what to do prompts the big old role of the eyes.
Using your discretion at the end of what to believe seems to be the best, at least in my opinion.

For the most part this is exactly how I feel. Here is an example. My wife refuses to let our 7 year old eat at McDonalds. She says it is the least healthy food you can get. Alright I get it, you want your kids to eat healthy. But how does our 7 year old not eat at McDonalds when all of his class mates do. And probably 200 million other kids in the world. Im fine with saying maybe you can only eat at McDonalds once a month or only with your friends. This is just one example. It drives me nuts.
