What's in a name?

Names are often shortened or altered, despite the wishes of parents. For instance, a child officially named Elizabeth may be known as Beth, Liz, Lizzy, Lisbeth, or Betty. What I've never quite understood is how my Grandma, christened Margaret, came to be known as Peg, or Peggy. Madge derives from Margaret, but how on earth did Peggy come into being?

My 'real' name is Judith. My mother never called me 'Judy' as she said she'd had too many milking cows called Judy.

My aunt was called by a different name by my late great-grandfather just because he liked that name better than her real name given to her by my grandparents.

Meg is another shortened version for Margaret and Peg isn't too far removed from Meg so maybe there is a connection there.
