Running out of places to visit

The only reason that I have not been on holiday for a month or so is that I have been awaiting appointments for eye treatment, which seem to have dragged on a little. With just over a week until my next appointment, it was my intention to book a holiday soon afterwards.
According to the latest news this morning, all flights from England to the popular resort of Sharm el Sheikh have been suspended. This is really frustrating because the flights to Tunisia were suspended a few months ago.
I will have to book a holiday soon before there are no places left for aircraft to fly to from England.
At this rate I may end up having to take holidays in Britain like I did many years ago.

There are still plenty of places you can visit depending what you want out of a holiday. Tunisia was brilliant the poor people have all lost their jobs in the hotels with no guests there. The same thing happened in Egypt with the shooting of tourists at Queen Hatshepsut's tomb at Deir el-Bahari Luxor. Tourists stayed away many waiters and hotel workers will lose their jobs, They have had their share of bad luck. The government are damned if they stop flights and would be damned if they didn't and something happened to a British airliner. I would not want my daughter flying and putting her life at risk just so someone could paddle in the sea for two weeks.

I can fully appreciate what you are saying Gary, but it still seems as though we are inadvertently supporting terrorism, despite this not being the intention.
The list of countries that the UK government website is warning us about visiting seems to get longer every day.

@garymarsh6 The USA example is the one that always amuses me. We have lost count of the number of multiple indiscriminate shootings that have occurred, yet the UK government has never issued warnings about travelling there.

@Asylum I actually feel quite safe there although we stick to well known places. New York was amazing yet I remember 30 years ago it was practically a no go area,

Air travel is becoming more dangerous than it has been in years. There are places I would not like to fly over, as crazies have weapons. It is very sad.

@ElizabethWallace sadly true, it was bad enough when airlines were disrupted by the Icelandic eruption, but terrorism is not the kind of problem that disappears with time.

The UK is arranging aircraft to repatriate the tourists currently there, so the possibility will still exist until all aircraft have returned here. The aircraft will also need to fly to Egypt in order to collect the passengers, so officially cancelling flights will serve little purpose.

@Asylum With monsters shooting down and blowing up commercial aircraft, vacation travel will become more and more difficult.

Some times I did that here and learned about some places I hadn't know existed. Met some new friends and really had a great time. I hope you are able to book something you will enjoy.

@Asylum Yes, except as long as people are willing to fly to these places, the pilots and crew will be required to go too. I don't know if they would be allowed to refuse and stay employed. If so, then I say, let people go.

@ElizabethWallace Another aspect is that if terrorism destroys tourism it will devastate the economy of some of these countries and make the government unstable, which in turn would benefit the terrorists because it adds a greater success to their actions.

A couple of weeks in Spain would probably cost me more than the same period in Egypt, despite being so local for me. Back in the early 1970s Spain was very cheap for tourists, but the popularity has driven the prices up so rapidly that it can be an expensive place these days.

I have to admit that we now visit our state and national parks by car. Air travel is very inconvenient and uncomfortable. Luckily the US is a very big place and I doubt I will ever run out of travel spots. Oh and terrorism is nothing new in Egypt. the last time I was there in the early 1990s a bunch of terrorists shot up a tourist bus in front of the museum in Cairo. I haven't really had a desire to go back.

It does seem to reduce your options significantly. Good luck planning your trip.

If I were so close as you are to Spain, I would visit Andalucia, in the south of the country. There are beautiful places, good resorts if you wish and historical places if you want that. Years ago, we stayed at an aparthotel, rented a car and were in Sevilla in one hour (driving like mad people as spanish people do).

I have visited Andalucia many times. My last visit there was in February this year when I flew to Malaga and stayed in Fuengirola for a couple of weeks.
It is a convenient place for travel and during that time I took trips to Gibraltar and Morocco.

@marguicha Well it is certainly the best place to learn flamenco music.

@Asylum I hope to go back to Andalucia in the not so far future as my grandson is studying flamenco guitar there.

I'm sure Britain has lots of nice places to visit as well. I haven't traveled abroad since 2010. I should start planning for it again soon!

There was a good reason for that suspension, though. There are lots of places worth visiting closer to home I'll bet.

Is it the threat of terrorism that is causing the flights to be cancelled?

Yes, the whole situation was brought to a head when the Russian aircraft was destroyed recently. We do know that several terrorist activities have taken place in Egypt, but to be fair nobody really knows whether the aircraft was brought down by terrorists or not.

It is a sad thing that air travel is like Russian Roulette.
