Chinese Ghost Festival! How about your country?

In China, we view Halloween as the ghost festival of western countries, with the impression of jack-o-lantern, halloween costume, mask, candy... we also have the Ghost Festival. Chinese Ghost Festival is dated on July 15 of lunar calendar. Actually, it starts from July 7 and ends at July 15. From July 7, the gate of Ghostdom is open and all the ghost can hang out in the world. Our deceased family are allowed to have reunion with us, so, we need to perform ceremonies to welcome and treat. Before our meals, we put the food on the table for our deceased family, after they "eat", then the food can be moved to our table and we can start. At July 15, all ghost have to get back to the Ghostdom because the gate will be closed, the people set off firecrackers, burn the ghost money, paper sycee, paper house, paper cloth, paper furniture etc. on the roads which we think will lead to the hell. We believe our deceased family can get them to use by this way. That is the escort ceremony. Thus, July is called "Ghost month" here, and the people don't go outside at night if no need, because you may "see" crowds of ghost. :) Nowadays, many mysterious ceremonies are deserted, you may not have the chance to see, even in villages. You can say it is superstition, you can say it is traditional festival culture. But I'd rather take it as the belief and respect of the deceased, as the culture. How about your country? Do you have any funny festival about Ghost to share with me?

We don't have any festivals about ghosts other than the ones held by some religions which people misunderstood in bygone times as worshiping the ghosts. Some Wiccans (Practitioners of Wicca.) believe that the boundaries that keep us separated from the ghosts of our ancestors/evildoers thins and allows those who wish to come to "our" side of the veil. The coven gathers and prays to the Goddess to keep everyone safe from the spirits that roam the Earth during that time. I do believe in ghosts. I know something/someone was also living in a house I lived in for several years. (I can glance at a room, leave it for a time and return, glance around again and tell you what has been moved from its original spot.) I had a small glass rose that I placed on my television set as a decoration. I would return home and the rose would be standing on its flower instead of laying as I placed it or it would be across the room on the stove instead of on the television. The house was being remodeled while I lived there. One room had never had a door to it before, but after hanging a door, it would rattle like someone wanted through but couldn't see that the door had a doorknob that must be turned to open the door. We checked for air leaks thinking a gust of air was making the door rattle, but never found any leaks in the room. The door would only rattle if it was closed and nobody was in the room. We called the ghost by the late owner's name. He had been killed just outside the house in a car accident.

@DaddyEvil What a story about the rose and also the rattling door. Just goes to show that Shakespeare was right when he had Hamlet say @There are more things in Heaven and Earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy'.

@jaboUK I am surprised you didn't recognize the rattling door story from Bubbs, Janet. It was a much expanded version there, but I was trying to trim it down so nobody called foul on me here.

I wish I had more information but I do know that our Ancient Native Americans held a great respect for their ancestors, however much of that was destroyed with the onslaught of pioneering settlers that took their lands and culture away from them in the 1600s, 1700s and 1800s.

It is pity! Too much is destroyed, thus the culture is more precious and mysterious. Anyway, the belief and respect for the ancestors should be kept in our hearts.

I agree @zhou17306 I wish I knew more about mine, but in the 1950s my parents didn't think much about it and we lived so far from any of my grandparents, that was a shame too.

@rebelann I believe your parents have the same thought with you. :) If we have past, that will be great, if we don't have, let's live in the moment.

haha~~ we also have heaven and hell, but they are different from yours. Here, to outward seeing, the hell(ghostdom) is in the jurisdiction of the heaven, actually they are non-interference in eatch other. Heave doesn't have the ghost, but have immortal like your Gods. Most ghost live in the hell unless the nowhere ghost(they are always ferocious). If the ghost or monsters want to get the identity of the immortal, it will take very very very long time to learn and practice. it is another story.... ;D

That was a fascinating read. I never knew but what a wonderful way to remember those who left this earth before you. We occasionally will have a haunted house or Military facility which is know for their ghosts. but other than Halloween I can't think of any we celebrate.

No we don't have any traditions regarding ghosts in England, but I enjoyed reading yours. (Now you have to get busy reading and commenting on other people's posts, then they will notice you and perhaps come and read yours). Good luck.
