Anyone have experience with assisted living condos?

I asked the question recently about how to convince elderly parents to consider moving into a retirement/assisted living condo, and a lot of you gave excellent answers. My siblings and I have been looking into these types of condos. They provide shuttle service for shopping, movies, medical appointments, things like that. They have a nice restaurant that provides 3 meals a day, not institutional food. They have a weight room, physical therapy space, yoga, and all kinds of activities. It's certainly not cheap, but we feel like we can get together to cover the cost. Both places we've visited seem really nice, but I'd like to hear from people who have family members who actually live in one. Are they as nice as they seem?

They generally are pretty nice. Research the reputation online. Another thing to look for is a continuum of care. Campuses around here sell or rent the condos or duplexes with the added benefit that as the aging person needs more care they are automatically able to move into portions that have more assistance and into long term care if needed. If a person who is in one of the "homes" needs hip or knee replacement, for instance, then when recovering from the surgery they have a room in the care facility available as well as on site physical therapy. It can be a pretty good deal and provide some peace of mind for distant family members.

I think you're right. I love the idea that with the continuum of care, they could get increased help when necessary, without uprooting again.

The concept is great, but they vary so much that you have to do lots of research. Visit at different times of the day. I know one that has a pretty good reputation near me, but when I visited it, it smelled horrid.
