The smart merchants in China has designated 11 November as Single's Day. 11.11.2015 starts with great profit for the merchants. Alibaba says that shoppers spend a total of 5 billion dollars in just 90 minutes. All the news about slowdown in China is apparently over-rated. I think Chinese still have the spending power, since most of them save half their salary or more. The household saving rate exceeds 50% in China. If they do not want to spend during the normal times, they certainly knows how to spend when there is a great deal.
In the first 30 minutes, total sales exceeded $3 billion.

Given that for much of the world it's a day of great mourning and solemnity, that seems pretty insensitive to make it a shopping day.

Are you sure that is the day or great mourning for much of the world? 11 November does not mean anything for any of us in Asia. I think the merchants in China are smart to use 1111 as a day for singles, but I do think that the sale is overdone.

@scheng1 In the countries which were involved in World War One, it's a major day.

You can search online for it. It is meant as a day to comfort the singles, since they will not be celebrating Valentine's day. Now it becomes the largest shopping day for the Chinese in China.

It was Singles' Day years before. People who didn't get married or didn't have a boyfriend(girlfriend) celebrate it together. It's about two years ago. Alibaba.com began to promotion on the day. So many people rush to purchase. and today it becomes Shopping Spree. But I didn't buy anything today, haha...

haha, it will be tough for you tomorrow. Everyone will be talking about what they have bought, and you have bought nothing. You can say that you buy "air".
