Do Windows Updates Mess with Your Computer?

Yesterday I wrote about having a clogged brain, but you know, the same thing happens to computers. They get clogged up and start to run slowly when too many applications are running at once. Generally, if my computer starts to be sluggish, I simply reboot to refresh the memory. But this morning, I hadn't done anything to make it sluggish. I didn't have my usual 20 tabs open, just three. And still, it would barely let me type a comment on myLot and it wouldn't run my game. I knew it wasn't because it needed a reboot, I had just turned it on. Then it hit me what the problem was - it was Microsoft. Whenever Microsoft wants to download updates to my computer, they line them up like angry villagers staging an assault on Frankenstein's castle. They start knocking on the windows and throwing mud. They stand at the gate with pitchforks and torches - nothing is going in, nothing is coming out. I am at a standstill. Sure enough, when I put the computer into shut down, it started downloading 18 updates. That took long enough, but when I returned to the machine an hour later, I found that it hadn't completely shut down. So I had to hold the power button down until it did, then it wanted to start up in safe mode, because it didn't shut down properly. That's when I get angry and yell at the computer - "That's not my fault, I didn't shut it down, Windows did you dummies!" The good news is that now that I have it up and running again, the sludge seems to have cleared and it's running normally. The bad news is that the next time this happens, it will still take me half an hour to figure out that the problem is not me, it's Windows updates kicking down the doors to get in. Have you experienced this slowdown just prior to updates coming through?

My Windows updated as I was trying to shut down my computer earlier this evening. It scared me, but nothing bad happened.

Mine gets slow when I have a mysterious non-responsive "script" running. No idea where it comes from--happens periodically. Its usually gone if I do a cold reboot. I dare not update my Windows. All hell could break loose.

I get this "script running" warning too, quite often. Do not know why?

@TheHorse This used to happen a lot on the other site. I'd forgotten about it till you mentioned it.

If you are using Windows 10 then the updates are set to automatic and cannot be changed, but all other Windows versions can be delayed. The option exists to set Windows Update to be run manually, so you can scan for updates when it is convenient and let it run while you watch television or have a meal.

I have done that in the past, but I can say that if it is left up to me, I never run them. I always put it off until some future time that never comes. I know, I am a bad Windows user.

@Rollo1 Prior to running Windows 10 I never allowed the system to install updates automatically. The one thing that I hate about automatic updates is that you cannot select which ones to install and which to decline.

YES, all the time, I hate when Microsoft wants to download the updates and I am working.

What really irks me is that instead of telling me that updates are waiting, it just clogs up my computer and I don't know why.

@Rollo1 This is Microsoft way, they have to do everything without telling you.

Yes, and it is very annoying. I am not a patient person as it is, and then that happens. Good your computer is running smoothly again now.

My computer is always sluggish because it's old.

Sometimes the window updates do not agree with the anti-virus. I will face a lot of problems, so I have to reboot the computer, and set to last good configuration. Sometimes I wonder why is there a need to have so many updates in a matter of days.

Updates can be a good thing, sometimes. I use run, type in msconfig, hit enter and uncheck windows updates (can recheck and also run utilities like defrag) as I like to be the person in charge of my computer not the other way around. I also talk to Eleanor (my pc's name) and we do get along, well most of the time.

The 18 I had took quite a long time. But once I got it restarted, all was well.

I mostly use my iPad these days and don't have nearly the trouble I did with my desktop.

Not too often, but yes. Every once in awhile I go to my temp folder and clean it out. My last computer did this automatically, but I have yet to figure out how to do that on this one. Sigh.

My computer is sluggish today, but it's not because of updates. But it did update yesterday. It usually don't bother me when it's updating.

This is interesting. My laptop is still running in first or second gear much of the time, but I don't think the updates are my problem. I was actually wondering if myLot was partly to blame. Things slow down whenever I log on. Do you know if there are plug-ins or something else associated with the site that might be causing this?

Never. I don't have issues with any of the updates on my computer. I normally will go in now and then and update myself the computer so I can control what is updated and what isn't. This saves a lot of headaches in the end.

This happened to me this morning. Behaving like a disgruntled child then the screen went black and next thing I know, it's running updates. But it's fine again now and the sun is shining.

Yes. I keep blaming our ISP or something, then I will realise it's the ever-invasive-no choice Microsoft updates, which, as far as I can see, are usually fixing nothing at all.
