I think I found a false widow spider

Yesterday I was clearing behind the tumble dryer (which is rarely used) and along with the dust and cobwebs and the ubiquitous dog hair I accidentally wiped up a spider. It was about the size of a frozen pea and seemed in quite a hurry to make itself inconspicuous, but I was curious and tried to take some photos, with mixed success. But based on those I think I have found one of the species sometimes called a false widow spider, also known as the cupboard spider, Steatoda grossa. These are one of a few species that are being reported in the press with frightening headlines warning of an invasion of killer spiders and lurid photos of people with swollen, suppurating limbs after being bitten. In fact this species was first reported in Britain in 1879 according to the wildlife trusts and usually lives a quiet life in dark corners. Although it can bite humans this is about as painful as a wasp sting and only dangerous if it becomes infected (like any wound) or if it causes an allergic reaction. This particular spider seemed to want nothing more than a quiet life. All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2015.

Ahhhh! I think I couldn't read all your post because it made me all itchy looking at that picture. It looks like one - best destroy it with fire just to be sure.

I'm afraid I just let it get back to its preferred corner. I guess I'd better not invite you round to my house!

Sometimes one wonders what spiders feed on hidden away as they are.

Yes I have wondered that, especially since they mostly come out at night when there aren't many insects flying.

In my place they bite me when I'm asleep. That's why they're not welcome!

I hope you are not invaded by poisonous spiders. I dread spiders because where I live, the only bug or animal to fear is the brown recluse and the spider lives in most of the houses, however clean. The best you can do it to catch it and check it with an image online.

We are lucky, we don't have any really dangerous animals here, at least not usually.

I am not fond of spiders. I'm afraid they do not get to live a quiet life in my place.

We've had our tumble dryer for two years and not even plugged it in yet.

Eek, I am sure we had one in our house a few weeks ago also. Horribly things. I am not a fan of spiders at all.

There is a useful website here if you want to try to identify what you found
Close up photos and information about Steatoda grossa, one of the False Widow spiders found in Britain and Northern Ireland

The immediate reaction of most spiders when uncovered is to run away, yet people still panic and feel threatened.

It may be an inoffensive spider but it does not look very friendly.
