Dog Seizures

My dog companion of 17 years passed away. The experiences I shared with Ellie were so wonderful, after a grieving period of two years (my heart was broken) I decided to rescue another small dog. Shandi is a min-pin/Chihuahua mix, sweet & sassy and becoming a good companion. I love her dearly. She is purported to have been just over a year old, I have had her for a year now. Into the second week of adoption Shandi had a seizure. Of course, this troubled me greatly. I spoke with a vet, but I am a naturalist. In speaking with others who have had dogs/cats who have seizures, nearly everyone has told me that the vets never really found the cause or aided the seizures to stop. I have done considerable research, have tried coconut oil daily, make most of her food, keep her away from harsh chemicals, and even give her Diatomaceous earth in her food. As of yet, she is still having seizures about every 4 to 6 weeks. They have gotten milder but I would sure like to find an absolute cure. Have any of you had this experience with your pets? Do you know of a natural cure? I am not seeking advice to go to the vet, they do not help and I am a naturalist, no chemical drugs. I am asking if you have successfully used some natural remedy.

So sorry that you are going through this anxiety over your beloved pet. I too have lost five dogs in the last 30 years and I still feel sad that they're gone. I don't know about dog seizures and what natural remedy for it.. I hope you find some relief for Shandi.. all the best ..

Thank you for your heartfelt concern..Our fur babies are as much our children as our flesh. I am sorry for your losses..yet they stay with us forever and we always miss their loyal love and the joy they brought into our life.

Our Sally is an Australian Cattle Dog; some folks call her breed a Blue Heeler. She is high drive and insistent on playing intense ball games when she is outside. She was the runt so is little- 30 pounds on her fat days. Sally is going on 6 now. For the last few years she has had seizures or episodes as I call them. They happen every month or so. I had her on a 4 star diet of Lamb and Rice. I read up on food and decided to spend extra money by putting her on a 5 star diet of Merricks Buffalo and Sweet Potato kibble plus cheese treats from my hubby. Sally hates to eat. She wants ball time! I choose not to medicate Sally. I've heard that the medications can wonk on her kidneys and liver. And cause her to be sedated. Her episodes do not happen as often now that she is on this diet. The episodes last less than 5 minutes but each one breaks my heart. She comes to me and collapses, her eyes asking me to get her through this terror and weakness. I hold her and talk gently to her and stroke her, waiting for this sad Sally to wade through, her usual spirit returns slowly. She licks her lips and there she is again! Be well- you and your fur person. Its a hard road.

@dorianna One minute our Sally is lively and catching toys in the air before they hit the ground! The next she has skied to a stop, her front legs splayed, her hinds ones refusing to obey. Each time I just want to scream but instead I hold on to her and tell her its okay. One awful time we were visiting in a good sized city, relatives there, just outside a farmer's market. Parking lot so cars and people. Sally suddenly crumpled at my husband's feet. My niece grabbed our other dog's leash and took charge of her and her own kiddo while we dealt with dear Sally. Horrors. A couple of minutes later, done and over with.

@sallypup wow, you have described my fear. Shandi and I are moving cross country next month. My son is constructing me an apartment in his home but probably won't be finished until February. In the meantime, my niece is coming to drive up with me and I will stay at her dad's until my place is completed. My brother is a minister, the church is across the street and he is always having members in and out of the house. I am concerned that Shandi will have a seizure and will frighten others. I am hoping that the stress of the move does not incur more frequent seizures, not knowing the cause.

@dorianna Just keep an eye on your fur person. I can't figure out why Sally has episodes. Some days she has been running like a mad dog and I'll wonder if she has been doing too much and other days she has had a quiet day and yet she'll have an episode. That's wonderful that your son is taking care of you.

I am a greater believer in homoeopathy and I treat Preiti for skin and digestives issues. I just searched the Net and there is treatment for Seizures too.

@dorianna Just look at this I feel you can start on Belladonna 30 Homoeopathy as you know have no side effects and safe.
Perhaps one of the greatest assets of homeopathy is its ability to treat seizures. Luckily, there is some research to back this claim up. Varshney et al published a study in Homeopathy 2007. In their study, a single remedy, Belladonna 200C, was used in ten

I have searched repeatedly..I could not find anything I have not already tried. What did you find. I agree, I am a naturalist and treat naturally. I am still giving her Diatomaceous earth.

@SIMPLYD Yes and right in harmony with my beliefs as I am a naturalist as well. I checked out the info and will try the Bella Donna. I am making a large move by car in a few weeks and do not want to attempt a treatment while she may be stressful. Once I arrive at new location what to implement some of the homeopathic suggestions.

My brother had 2 different dogs of your same breed. One of them had seizures. They never could find a way to cure the dog. But on the other hand the dog lived 12 years. So go figure. His wife works for a vet and they tried a lot of natural cures on the dog and nothing seemed to help.

@dorianna If you can find some pure Noni juice in your area you can mix a tiny bit if this with her food. We sometime feed our dog pure noni to help them. But we grow this here on the islands and we have it in our yard.

I am discouraged and encouraged. on the one hand I see the possibility of having to deal with seizures for a long time but encouraged that it does not necessarily mean her life will be shortened by the seizures which was my concern.
