It's a free world (allegedly) so stop trying to silence MyLot members who don't agree with you.

There are a minority of members on MyLot who seem to think they’re entitled to dictate who can and who can’t have an opinion on certain types of posts.
MyLot is a very international site with members from all over the world. No post is likely to make sense (or to appeal) to every member but some members do seem to want to restrict WHO can respond to certain types of posts and to be exceedingly rude to those who don’t meet their qualifying criteria.
Let’s take the issue of the US presidential elections and the current jockeying for position of the various candidates. Another issue we non Americans aren’t supposed to have an opinion on is gun control. Apparently anyone who doesn’t live in the USA should keep their stupid mouths shut because they don’t know anything about what’s going on. OK, I’m paraphrasing but that’s the gist of the message.
What some in the US may not be aware of is that the rest of us all over the world – whether we like it or not, and most of us don’t like it much – are dragged into the issue of your elections. Firstly our media coverage is pretty much non-stop. We don’t get a vote but believe me, we’ve been bored silly for a long time with the childish behaviour of some of the candidates. We are not commenting in a vacuum because the world’s media are obsessed with your elections.
The other thing to keep in mind is that US citizens have a vote – the rest of us don’t, but we still know that we’ll suffer the fall-out of any bad choices taken by the US electorate. The old expression ‘America sneezes and the world gets a cold’ has never been more true than it is today. Some of us – many of us – have seen our countries dragged into wars we wanted no part of in order to back up one Bush or another. Most of us have seen our economies dragged down by financial crises that started in the USA and had a tsunami-like impact around the world. The American president is not just the guy (or gal) who runs America – they’re the person whose actions can impact the lives of people all over the world. It stands to reason that person should not be out-spokenly racist or moronically stupid.
So next time you want to have a go at non Americans for having an opinion on big ‘American’ issues like elections and gun control, remember this is an international site and not your own private club with heavily armed guards on the door to keep the riff-raff out. We may not know as much as you do on the topics, but our opinions are our opinions and you’re not entitled to decide if they are right or wrong.

I live in the US, and I can tell you first hand, that there are a lot of people who are not US citizens that know a lot more about what is going on here (US) than some of its (US) citizens.

@boiboing Then those same people should not be allowed to express their views on other countries, right? Only fair.

@cindiowens No, I'd have to disagree. If I agreed, I'd be as bad as them. We'd just end up with a whole host of little cliques that only commented on each other's posts. Let the country-club folk pontificate all they like. Then we can see just how clever they are.

I don't mind if people want to post about US elections or issues, but I do object to someone from another country who posts discussion after discussion about how stupid Americans are. I am quite sure that would be more objectionable to more people if the word "Americans" were replaced with any other nationality. I have opinions on many issues in the UK and other countries, but I usually preface my opinion with a statement that acknowledges that it is not my decision to make and I never try to degrade or insult people of another nationality. So, perhaps there are people like those you write about in your discussion, but there are also those like the ones I have written about in my comment. Everyone can have an opinion, but it would be nice if they stopped short of being insulting.

@Rollo1 there is a difference between criticism and racism that many fail to see in discussing international politics as they make sweeping generalizations based on nothing - fortunately those writing on here have more sense

I'm used to people having very strong opinions about people in the US. Many outsiders don't realize how diverse we are as a people and how different our individual states and regions differ.

To be fair, most Americans do not want to be dragged into these wars, either.
One of the things that I like best about myLot is the fact that we can get to know and be friends with people from all over the world. I love the fact that I can discuss and find out how other people and other countries feel about and handle different situations and circumstances. I think that it is good to see things from different perspectives, and I enjoy hearing other people's views on things. I have learned quite a bit from my friends on here, and I am sorry that a handful of people make it difficult on the majority of people.

Unfortunately, I have also seen people bashing Americans and saying that we are all ignorant and loud. There is ignorance and intolerance in every country, race, religion, etc. I would love to see more acceptance, especially when it is so easy these days to reach out and communicate with others around the world.

@boiboing Yes I have, which is why I mentioned it here. There was more of it before when myLot was paying a few years ago, but I have also seen it since myLot has come back, although not as much yet.

There is no need for anyone to insult others whether it be personal or otherwise. I have to agree with what you are saying but l would never belittle myself by being rude neither would l attack someone else's views. I may not always agree with them but l would hope those who l enjoy reading probably have the same morals and ideals as we do!

@garymarsh6 There are times when you have to tell someone s/he is wrong, if for no other reason than for their own sake. Obviously, you can do so without name-calling or insults, but the simple statement, "This is wrong" is sometimes a kindness.

I learned a long time ago to stay away from certain discussions on Mylot, because you will get people like that. I try to avoid political and religious topics if I can help it.

I've had a run-in yesterday with such an individual. As it turns out, he was unable to form a logical, rational, and respectful counter argument to a post he disagreed with. He ended up resorting to what I considered to be personal attacks instead.
The golden-line he brandished around was "you don't know what you're on about, because you ain't born there.."
That is on par with saying "I can't post a review for Fridges on Amazon, because I am not a Fridge myself"..Or "I don't know anything about Fridges, because I wasn't born as a Fridge!"
I quickly extracted myself from this type of weird logic.. it's simply a waste of time!
What he didn't realise is, as an advocate for his beloved candidate, he succeeded in driving people away instead..

Super and meaningful post, I too have noticed that some like to close the door on outsiders opinion, like we all live in a vacuum... and many do need to accept this IS a discussion site, where everyone is invited to add their twopennyworth, whether you like it or not, and villifying others for their opinions or posts, is not in the scheme of things...

haha, that is a strong message.
US is notorious for having a say in everything.
See all the words passed through the mouths of US politicians to China, and other countries.
Whether China has democracy or not is none of US business, yet every politician has to say something about it.
Yet they do not allow anyone to have an opinion about their system.

@boiboing That is the typical attitude of the politicians.
Perhaps they want to get the voters approval so they have to criticize the lack of democracy or human rights or anything else.
Sometimes it takes up a few pages of the newspapers!
I think most people are more concerned with the cost of living than about politics, especially the politics of other countries.

@boiboing I know what you meant but I'm being the opposition in this thread remember. MyLot world isn't free either. It is a dictatorship. All websites are because they can if they choose, delete posts, delete people OMG we can be deleted what a terrible thought! Fortunately for members myLot is very considerate of it's community and allows members to freely discuss anything but only asks that people be nice to each other. Actually it is written in the guidelines differently than that but anyway yes I am correct. I am always correct, no that is not true, I am always learning, stepping up to the microphone and changing my viewpoint. Something like running a good political campaign? But I know what you are talking about, freedom does mean expressing and listening to those that express. Communication.

Well said, actually we have an unbiased opinion on the happenings in America because we not only follow the news but we can also stand apart and looking at things from from an Rational point of view. However, if a topic is open for discussion. its an open invitation to everyone to air their views.

I should stress that the person who started the discussion that prompted this was entirely fair about what people thought. It was another commenter who made himself the self-appointed assessor of who was or was not entitled to an opinion.

I am from the U.S. but I appreciate all opinions. I might tell someone I do not agree with their opinion, as we all have our own viewpoints but I welcome the views of all people as long as it is given with respect. As an American, I regret if anyone made you feel like your opinion was unacceptable.
I am very different, a loner and non-traditional. My opinions are often way out there compared to the normal thinking so, even though I am an American, I also suffer the chance that individuals prefer I do not express it. I welcome your opinion on any of my posts as long as it is a healthy debate.
We should never be so close-minded that we cannot appreciate another point of view. That is what makes life and myLot interesting.
